Mo Mallard might not be the only familiar face at the i wireless Center on opening night in October.
The two-days-old Quad-City Mallards selected a few familiar names and faces in Thursday's International Hockey League dispersal and expansion drafts.
First, Mallards consultant Steve Ryan tapped center Glenn Detulleo and goaltender Jason Tapp in a draft to disperse players on the roster of the Kalamazoo Wings.
Next, center Marty Standish was the Mallards' first pick and forward Rob Voltera their last in an expansion draft of players left unprotected by five returning IHL clubs.
Co-owner Eric Galler was uninvolved in the draft, but said the familiar names and faces certainly make sense from a marketing standpoint.
"I know the fans have a connection with these guys," he said.
Ryan was unavailable for comment.
Tapp tended goal in the Mallards final two seasons, amassing a 65-39-15 record. He had 2.57 goals-against average in 2005-2006 and a 3.22 GAA the following year.
Detulleo played 76 games in 2006-2007 and 12 before being traded away the next campaign. He scored 19 goals and had 83 points in a Q-C sweater.
Standish was with the Mallards in 2005-2006, scoring 15 goals and 48 points while amassing 200 penalty minutes.
Voltera, an 11th-year pro with two seasons of American Hockey League experience, played for the Mallards in 2003-2004, scoring nine goals and dishing 10 assists in just 29 games.
Also selected in the dispersal draft was battlesome forward Tyler Willis, defenseman Chris Trick. In the expansion draft the Mallards called a pair of familiar former United Hockey League foes, veteran defenseman Darryl McArthur and forward Shaun Fisher.
The Mallards also tabbed defenseman Jason Robinson, goaltender Sebastian Laplante, and forwards Jason Chafe and Henry Kuster in the expansion rounds.
Galler said the team is "excruciatingly close" to hiring a general manager.
"We've got our guy," he said. "We're just putting the finishing touches on it."
The new owners also have interviewed more than one potential coach and Galler said, "We'll have a coach in short order. We're moving full-steam ahead."
