Back during Labor Day weekend the Camanche volleyball team was struggling. They had just been ousted from the Muscatine tournament and their record stood at an un-glamorous 5-3.

That was then, this is now.

The Indians ripped off their 36th straight victory Tuesday, topping Durant 25-11, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22 in a regional final to advance to the Class 2A state tournament. There they will face Wapsie Valley in a quarterfinal at 6 p.m. on Nov. 12.

The trip to state will be Camanche's first in volleyball in 23 years.

"After that Muscatine tournament I wasn't sure we were going to beat anybody," Camanche coach Mark Cremer said. "I'm pretty excited about how this has gone."

Durant (33-6) did its best to hang with Camanche. After two games the teams were tied at one. The Wildcats managed to stay close, tying it at 12, but Camanche scored eight of the next 11 points to open a lead and never looked back.

Durant coach John Walsh saw the game as almost a carbon copy of their first matchup.

"We played them tough in the second game, but we just got off on the wrong foot," Walsh said.

While Camanche's Chelsea Moore and Ashtyn Dixon racked up big kill and dig numbers, it was Ashley Gonzalez who was in seemingly in on every key point.

"Gonz is probably the strongest girl on our team," Moore said. "She can probably bench me. When she hits that ball straight down, everyone gets excited."

Dixon and Cremer credited Gonzalez's growth as a big reason that Camanche has such a long winning streak.

"She's been on fire this year," Dixon said.

After the match, the focus turned to the state tournament. Moore, Dixon and Tiana Bark have state experience in tennis and are looking to use that background to help further their cause next week, because they know their road doesn't get any easier.

"All the teams are good out there, there's not one bad team," Dixon said. "We're going to have to play our best to keep advancing round to round."
