Watching eight-man football was a bit of a culture shock.
I understood before heading to the game that it would be different, but I still was caught off-guard. From the opening kick off, I knew I wasn't in the Quad-Cities anymore Toto.
After the kickoff sailed into the end zone it was first-and-10 at the 15. And that wasn't the last of the surprises of the night.
It took a long run by Preston's Kyle Feller for me to notice the second change, the length of the field. It was 20 yards shorter. As I was figuring out Feller's run I caught myself going "Where's the 50-yard line?"
It wasn't there.
From the pressbox, it wasn't something that I noticed right off. The field was shorter and narrower, butting up against the baseball field. Technically, it was the outfield.
If a receiver would catch a post-corner route for a touchdown his momentum would conceivably carry him into first base. The touchdown would only count if he beats the tag. Just kidding.
West Central also ran a funky play when it punted. The punter lined up at a receiver position, came in motion as the ball was snapped got it on the pitch and then punted. It was crazy to watch.
I was expecting more of an arena football style of play, but I think the rainy conditions held that down. But changes or not, there was drama.
The game went down to the last play, just what every fan loves. Given the chance, it was something I would like to see again.
