Moline senior Shannon Doh is ready for Saturday's United Township Sectional swim meet. So, too, is Rock Island freshman Kelly Bishop.

It was difficult for anyone else competing at the Western Big Six swimming and diving meet Saturday to get traction against a Galesburg juggernaut. The Silver Streaks won seven of the 12 events in defending their conference title with a 75-point victory over runner-up Moline 326-251. United Township, which had no conference champions, was third at 234, with the host Rocks fourth at 206, and Quincy, which entered only two swimmers in varsity competition, fifth at 15.

"We actually tapered more last year for this, so I'm actually surprised at how fast we swam," Galesburg coach Ray VanHootegem said. "We were more concerned about sectionals next week. We did less yardage, but it was high-quality yardage. The girls were still whining (during the week) that practice was too hard."

But it yielded results. The Streaks swept the three relay events, putting on a surge in the 200-yard medley relay to beat Moline by more than a second.

The quartet of Lauren Albert, Colleen Shelly, Kathleen Varner and Natalie Statham dominated the 200 freestyle relay, winning by almost 4 seconds in setting a new conference mark of 1 minute, 41.42 seconds, beating the 11-year-old record by more than a second.

"We all went to Florida for nationals last year (as spectators); this year, we could actually make it with that time. We've worked hard to get down to that time," Statham said. "(In the medley), we just really wanted to beat Moline, but we didn't see that time coming at all."

Galesburg won one more open event than last year (four this year), with Kelly Napier repeating as the diving champion.

As for Doh and Bishop, both won two individual titles. Doh wasn't happy with her 25.25-second clocking, but it was enough to win the 50 freestyle by .38 seconds. She also won win the 100 free, fighting off the combined charges of Galesburg's Varner and Albert to win in 54.61.

"We're really all tired; coach (Joe Ehlers) tapers us for sectionals. We just wanted to come and see what we could do. It's not really a big deal; I thought I could go faster," said Doh, who was joined on the champions' list by teammate Allison Patch (first in the 100 backstroke). "(Between now and next week) I just want to qualify for state. I don't want to qualify by just being (a sectional) champion; I want to get the (state cut) time as well. Your seed at state is a lot higher (when you reach state cuts)."

Bishop also had two wins, flirting with the Rocky school record in the 200 individual medley before beating fellow freshman Patch by almost 31/2 seconds. She also won the 500 freestyle, winning by 16 seconds.

"It's definitely the best I've done in a 200 IM," said Bishop, who beat her seed time by 1.45 seconds. "But I think there's still room for improvement. (In the 500), a lot of it is just learning how to swim it. Each time, I gain more knowledge."
