MORRISON, Ill. - It was probably the closest thing the Morrison football team has had to a low point all season.

The Mustangs went into the locker room down five, the first time they had been behind at the half all year. Their opponent, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, looked unstoppable through the air. And momentum was going the Falcons' way.

Fickle thing, that momentum.

Morrison caught fire in the second half, scoring 35 points to defeat Gibson City 42-18 in the Illinois Class 2A semifinals. The Mustangs will play for the first state title in school history Friday in Champaign against Maroa-Forsyth, which beat Marshall on Saturday.

Kyle Janssen gained 100 of his 114 yards in the second half with three touchdowns for the Mustangs, who trailed 12-7 at the half. He also caught four passes for 64 yards. The numbers came despite not being a big part of the game plan, Janssen said.

"I figured Josh (Vos) would run the ball a lot, and he did," Janssen said. "But I just did my job, and it was awesome."

Morrison coach Cory Bielema dismissed his senior's assessment of the game plan.

"He's being modest, he's always part of the game plan," Bielema said. "Kyle's approaching 1,000 yards this year. He could easily have quite a bit more if he was the feature back."

The featured back would be all-stater Vos, who gained 136 yards on the ground with a touchdown, and also caught two touchdown passes totaling 92 yards from Andrew Cook.

"The past couple of years I've said I've always been open," Vos said. "This year Andrew would never throw it to me. Last year Devon (Mouw) would never throw it to me. Maybe they'll throw it to me a little bit more now."

Bielema pointed back to last week's game against Orion at halftime to tell his team that it needed to dig deep if it wanted to advance.

"We knew we had to go a little bit deeper this week," Bielema said. "Boy they came out like gangbusters."

Morrison scored three plays into the second half on a 74-yard catch by Vos and forced a fumble four plays later that turned into Janssen's first touchdown. After another three-and-out, Gibson City's punt traveled seven yards. Janssen busted loose on the next play for 33 yards and a score.

"It just started snowballing on them and we didn't let up," Bielema said.
