The state cross country qualifier talks about running barefoot and "dilapidated" shoes.

The United Township junior isn't on Facebook, but he is in the field for the Illinois Class 3A state cross country meet Saturday

What is the most fun course you've ever run?

"I'd have to say the Alleman Invite because I was pretty relaxed there. It was really muddy, and we were having fun just running through the puddles. We all just ran it pretty much together."

You're a Webster - What are the best words or phrases in your personal dictionary?

"A word I like to use sometimes, one I brought to the team - dilapidated. We just use it for dumb things, like 'Your shoes are dilapidated. You're dilapidated.' "

What's your must-have running accessory, and why is that important to you?

"For me, it'd be my multi-vitamin and protein shake because I'm not the biggest person, and my diet's not the best. It's every night before practice."

What's the farthest distance you've ever run at one time?

"It was a Sunday run, I think I went on 15 miles. I just wanted to get out. It was real nice weather, and it felt good. I just kept going."

I've heard a couple of places that running shoes can actually cause more injuries than they prevent. Is there something to be said for barefoot running?

"When I was younger, I used to live in Erie, in the country. I'd actually run barefoot almost every day. I was probably 5 to 7. Me and my brothers would play tag and stuff. You run faster barefoot, but you have to watch out for rocks."

Football and basketball players seem to get all the love. What's a cross country runner do to woo the ladies?

"I don't know. Run fast. You gotta be pretty good, I guess."
