Last Friday was a bittersweet day for sophomore Grace Fennelly and the Davenport Assumption basketball team.
Sweet with a victory at Pleasant Valley that placed the Lady Knights in the driver's seat for a seventh consecutive Mississippi Athletic Conference title.
But bitter because that same day, Fennelly was told her left knee injury was the result of an ACL tear that will keep her off the court for about six months.
"It kind of sunk in a little bit (easier), because I've done it before," said Fennelly, who tore her right ACL in the summer of 2007. "It's never totally surprising."
Fennelly was not only one of the youngest members of Assumption's 10-girl rotation, she was also the Knights' third-leading scorer with 7.3 points per game.
"We loved that she brought so much toughness to the court," Assumption coach Todd Borrison said. "She brought ball handling, and the ability to lock down on someone defensively.
"A kid that could be that multi-faceted for us, as a sophomore, that speaks volumes for her."
Fennelly sounded determined to be healthy and back on the court for the start of the 2010-11 season.
"I'm pretty happy with it," Fennelly said of her sophomore campaign. "I wish I could have done more. If I get my surgery soon enough, I'll be back by the end of the summer."
Harrington nears 2K mark
Davenport North senior guard Amber Harrington shut the book on any scoring title races a long time ago - her 34.6 points leave a canyon-sized gap between her and any other player in Iowa.
Now she's just chasing a major milestone. According to North athletic director Dave Shovlain, Harrington has scored 1,885 points for her career.
If she can put in 115 points before the end of North's season, she'll become the 14th Iowa girls' player in the five-player era to reach the 2,000-point mark. Only Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Anne O'Neil (2,494 points from 1997 to 2001) would be in Harrington's company among Class 4A players.
North has three more games scheduled (Pleasant Valley, Central and then at Muscatine in the regional quarterfinal). If the Wildcats lose to Muscatine, Harrington has to score 38.3 points per game to hit 2,000; if North wins and earns a fourth game, she must average 28.8 points.
More from the infirmary
Fennelly isn't the only MAC player whose season has ended.
West's leading scorer, Abby Willich, has mono and finishes her senior year with a 10.9-point average. Clinton junior Ebony Jackson (7.6 points) has a recurring ankle injury that will hold her out through the postseason.
Indians reach 12-year height
Camanche (14-3, 8-2 Big East) is ranked fourth in Class 2A, which is the highest the Indians have been ranked since they reached No. 2 during the 1997-98 season.
However, the celebration was fairly short-lived as Camanche was upset 50-49 on Friday at Preston (14-4, 8-2) as the Trojans forced a tie with Camanche for second in the conference standings.
