Chasson Randle played a couple of home games Friday.
In the midst of summer travels that have taken him to Argentina - where he helped the United States claim gold in the FIBA Americas U16 Championship - and have kept on the AAU circuit since, Randle joined his Rock Island High School teammates for a pair of wins in opening day play at the sixth Justin Sharp Memorial Shootout.
"It is nice to be home for a couple of days. The summer - it's flying by," said Randle, who was on the court with his Illinois Wolves AAU team on Thursday at a tourney in suburban Chicago and will rejoin them on Sunday for a tournament in Milwaukee.
"I've had a lot of great experiences and a lot of opportunities to work on my game. That never stops."
Several college coaches, including Illinois assistant Jay Price, Wisconsin assistant Gary Close and Purdue assistant Rick Ray, watched as Randle helped lead the Rocks to a 33-point win over Davenport North and a nine-point decision over La Salle-Peru on Friday.
Additional coaches are expected to be in attendance today as the 24-team shootout continues, with the Rocks scheduled to take the court at the Rock Island Fieldhouse at noon.
Randle is getting used to the attention.
"It's nice to know people are watching. You can tell how serious schools are by how often they watch," Randle said.
That said, Randle said he is not close to paring down his list of suitors.
"I'm nowhere close to making that decision," Randle said. "I'm going to have some difficult choices to make just to cut the list, but right now, I'm trying to be as successful as I can on the court and see where that leads. My focus is on my game."
On the court, the 6-foot-2 junior who averaged 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists as an all-state sophomore is working to develop his skills as a point guard.
"That's one thing I'm hearing from a number of recruiters. They see me in that position at the next level, and I'm working on that," Randle said. "As much as I see myself as a scorer, I believe I can be a point guard, too."
Randle welcomes the chance to take the floor with his Rock Island teammates this weekend almost as much as coach Thom Sigel welcomes the opportunity to have most of his team together for the shootout.
"It's always difficult in the summer to get everyone together on the same weekends, but we're close this weekend and that gives our guys a chance to get used to being out there together," Sigel said. "This isn't December or January basketball and fans shouldn't expect that, but it is important as we work to develop our team."
That is important to Randle as well.
"Overall, I think we're making progress and we need weekends like this to find the chemistry and consistency that it will take next season," Randle said. "This is all part of it, and I'm glad to be out here with these guys."
