Two decades ago, Kevin Skillett would give a fifth-grade Marc Polite the hardest of times.

At next month's Genesis PSP Shootout, Polite hopes to return the favor.

Skillett's Bettendorf boys basketball team squares off against Polite's United Township squad in one of six games Saturday, Dec. 19 at Augustana's Carver P.E. Center. The pairings were announced Monday at a news conference.

In the late 1980s, Skillett was a star player for East Moline, along with Polite's older brother, Aaron. Pre-teen Marc liked to tag along to practice.

"I remember when he was just a little guy running around, and I would pick on him quite a bit," Skillett said. "I hope he doesn't remember that. He's a lot bigger than me now."

Polite is bigger, but like Bettendorf, UT has a lot of gaps to fill from last year's group.

Polite is especially eager for his first meeting with the man who has gone from childhood tormentor to coaching role model.

"He's a guy that I've always admired, and I really expect what he's done at Bettendorf," Polite said of Skillett. "It's unbelievable the program he has there."

Those two tip off at 4:30 p.m., the fourth game.

Headlining the 16th annual event will be an 8 p.m. rematch of last year's Rock Island vs. Davenport Central game. The Blue Devils won 65-63 behind 28 points from Hal Bateman.

Bateman has graduated, but the bulk of Central's team is back, as is Rocky guard Chasson Randle.

Just before the marquee matchup, North Scott and Moline meet. Those two schools combined to win 37 games last season.

Another compelling pairing figures to be experience-heavy Davenport Assumption and Galesburg, who play at 2:45.

The game will be the third in the Shootout for first-year Assumption coach Joe Barrer. As a player for the Knights, he figured into a win and a loss in the 1997 and '98 events.

"When I was growing up, we heard a lot about how good Illinois basketball was, and we wanted that same respect," Barrer said. "This is our way of showing that we can compete with those schools."

Iowa has won six Shootout titles to Illinois' seven but none since 2004.

A tie for most team wins will be settled this year.

UT and Bettendorf both hold 10-5 records in the event.
