Willie Argo waited patiently for what he knew eventually would come Thursday night at Brady Street Stadium.
The scouting report told the Davenport Assumption junior linebacker that Central would throw quick slant passes near the goal line.
Midway through the third quarter, Argo’s waiting — and the scouting report — paid off.
Central had a first-and-goal at the 6 and was threatening to cut into a two-touchdown lead when Argo intercepted a Trey Meyer pass, and the Knights ran away with a 24-0 Mississippi Athletic Conference win.
“They kind of had us on our heals,” said Argo, who also ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns from his halfback position.
“We were tired, they were driving, and they had momentum. It was a big play.”
Assumption (2-0, 2-0), ranked third in Class 4A, recorded a shutout for the second straight week and did its part to set up a showdown with top-ranked Bettendorf next Thursday.
On top of Argo’s 140 yards, which came on 22 carries, the Knights rolled up 204 more on the ground to just 41 for Central (1-1, 1-1).
The Blue Devils did move the ball through the air.
Meyer completed 19 of 28 passes for 179 yards with senior Mike Waterman pulling in eight of those balls for 112 yards.
“Central was a much improved team,” Assumption coach Wade King said. “They had a good attack offensively, but we’re playing pretty good defensively right now.”
Argo ran for 88 yards in the first half and scored on runs of 7 and 9 yards to give the Knights a 14-0 lead at intermission.
The Blue Devils came out attacking in the third quarter, though. Meyer completed consecutive passes to Waterman to start their second drive, and later a 12-yarder across the middle to Robert Gogulich to set up Central’s best scoring chance of the night.
But Argo’s interception stole back the momentum, and Assumption added two more scores — a Zach Guzzo field goal and an Athony Miller 12-yard run — to seal the win.
“We were pumped; we were excited,” Central coach Max Duvall said. “The interception really took the wind out of our sails.”
