Chula, the bottom line is they don't have the moral character & intestinal fortitude to be good American citizens. Honestly, if they did they would want to honor our laws, & enter/remain in America as legal entrants, whether permanent immigrants or temp/guest workers. We want strong, honest, trustworthy immigrants, not people willing to break laws & thumb their noses at accepted behavior.
For all those that keep harping on how we "owe" the world less blessed a hand up, YOU ARE WRONG! We "should" give aid wherever we can, but not at a price that destroys our country. Right now our country is in more danger from the drugs flowing from Mexico into the US than we ever have been from the terrorists. Securing the borders should be priority #1, yet our leaders do nothing but waste money in pretend efforts like the "electronic fence folly". We stopped amnesty by speaking up en masse. We need to do so regarding border security, politicians only act when fearful the people will grow restive.

If they start looking for drivers for the buses to haul all the illegals back across the border, count me in. There are plenty of us retirees who would volunteer to help get rid of these law breakers to give our grand children a better chance at a decent paying job. No, not the $8.00 or less that the meat packers are paying now but the $12 - $15 they would have to pay if we stop the stream of illegals. By the way we need to stop the "Church of Child Molesters" from housing these law breakers also. That church is still on the side of law breakers as they were when they hid the pedophile priests from their accusers.

whitetigress:"...but the person who came into the U.S. from Canada, what ethnicity were they?" Italian :-) The other was Korean. Both spoke very clear English.
"...people trying to get into the U.S. illegally die." No matter the #'s, 1 life is too many. I have cried or come close to it at times when I've heard/read of folks who tell their stories. Some talked of how they gave $5,000US to get to another country, Mexico or Canada, so they could get into the US. Then they had to pay at least $1,000 more to go from there into the US.
"...illegally don't want to learn the language and uphold the laws." I was fortunate to only meet a few who didn't respect the laws. Language always was a problem. I was learning words from the kids & they were teaching me their's. Some kids translated for their folks.

Chula, when a burglar sees something someone else has & decides he/she wants it, they break in & steal it. So then they are sought out, & if captured they stand trial 7 pay for their crime if convicted.
Chula, so Mexicans see how much better life is in America, they break into our country, steal whatever they can get. Why are they any better than the burglars? Why shouldn't they face the same justice system when caught? Why should they get special treatment over, say, Ethiopians or Cambodians or lithuanians or Columbians?
I'm getting very tired of Mexican advocates portraying their country as a third world poverty center, it is not. I'm really getting sick of Mexicans coming here illegally instead of fighting to make their country a better place. They think enough of it to march down American streets proudly waving Mexican Flags, but they don't do that in Mexico. No MickD's down the street. Go home, make your country better. Isn't that what patriots do, work for a nations betterment?

After re - reading the article, something stinks. Ash said she BELIEVED Johnny was the father. She took the baby from Jen to give to Johnny for a period of time. Then without warning, she took the baby back and returned him to Jen and Jeff. What did she see then that she felt she had to take the baby back and return him to the couple who were going to adopt him?
Johnny's history shouldn't enter into the debate, but clearly, after the stunt she pulled, we need to know what he did to warrant a probation officer.
Amused, this happened when she was in high school. Didn't say if he was in school or what.
When the time comes, the best interests of the child should come first. Then paternity should be established. After that, if Johnny is the father, then CPS should monitor the situation. If not, then Jen and Jeff can have Daniel with no baggage.

What type of programs would be acceptable to ALL to either help these folks stay here legally or to be deported to their original country? I don't want illegal aliens simply because they are breaking the law(s). I don't want folks who have murdered, rapists, other undesirables who can't stay where they were. This country is 1 where folks can blend in. Or hide in. How is a background check done on those who are caught? Are each individual who're being deported fingerprinted? Photographed?

Were the illegal immigrants/guest worker wannabees/temp workers for permanent jobs(?) "dignified"when they snuck across our border in the dead of night, when they crawled into hidey holes made in vehicles, when they crowded like cattle into the back of trucks to be taken to their next destinations? How "dignified" were they then? They KNOW they do wrong, else why cross in stealth? If they KNOW they do wrong, they must be willing to face whatever consequences are involved if/when they are discovered. They do not fit any definition of those seeking asylum. They are not persecuted, in fact their govt. helps them. They may be poor, but so are some Americans. They are not starving, they have access to health care in their homelands, they probably don't have cable/dishes, or 3 fast food franchises on every corner. We do not owe them anything. If we choose to help, or accept many either permanently/temporarily, good for us, & them. We have no obligation/debt. They didn't place us here.

So rather than increase patrols in the areas of high crime, Davenport police announce they are increasing their seatbelt patrols and speed traps. I, for one, am DISGUSTED every Monday morning when I look at my QC TIMES newspaper and see the crime map. Davenport is littered with crime every week. But instead of the city council tasking law enforcement with doing their job, the police do the safe and profitable thing of issuing traffic tickets. DISGUSTING! The problem isn't the business. The problem is the criminals. City Council: stop trying to take the easy way out you lazy bunch of slackers. DO YOUR JOB, AND CLEAN UP THIS ARMPIT OF IOWA.

I have been keeping, in seclusion, a group of aliens who crashed on Earth 4 years ago. Remember the meteor shower? It was cover for their mission. When I arrived at the crash site I almost stepped on objects I didn't recognize. It looked like a modified kid's toy airplane/spaceship but made out of the shiniest plastic I'd ever seen. Almost looked like the Delta Flyer. I was told later the metal was "griddlcakeglued" & coated with a sugary strawberry coating to make it less conspicuous.
When the deoxythymidine monophosphate based creatures realized they could survive in our atmosphere they thought they may be rescued. What they didn't realize when they started their trip was how huge Earth actually was. They thought it was about 20 times the size of their planet. Their SOS didn't reach farther than 3.7 miles.
Since I literally stumbled upon them I've had them in a cabinet in the kitchen. Dog & cat leave them alone, they found out the Ensurfables don't taste ellll & will pull whiskers

Thanks for writing, Emily. Obviously your parents are doing many things right!
While you might imagine that being completely 'on one's own' makes adults more 'vulnerable,' the truth is that teens still are developing and often lack the full capacity to see the consequences of their behavior. Teens are also generally more impuslive. That is not a judgment. The part of the brain that sits on impulsivity is still in process during the teen years.
That said, all parents are not alike any more than all teens are all alike. Some parents are woefully lacking in oversight and simply let their teens run wild. Some teens do that no matter what parents say. Other teens (I was one) are very straight laced kids who rarely test the limits.
Parents asking many questions is a mark of their concern and maybe memories of youthful bad judgment.

Perhaps Culver took a look at the fake unions LM-2 reports to see how much the labor faker union leaders salaries are, and how some receive more than one salary for holding more than one "administrative" position. The reports are the equivalent a unions 1040 and are available on the DOL website.

waldo: you sound like a typical liberal with no ability to think logically.
You think that anyone who supports Israel and their quest to not give up any more land than they already have is somehow evil?
It seems every time the USA tries to "help" Israel, Israel loses another chunk of land or some more Islamic terrorists they have locked up in prison. Like that guy the Clintons encouaged Israel to release as a goodwill gesture, you know, the guy that flew an airplane into the WTC.
But it's good for you that you are on record as being anti-Semetic, waldo...that way if we ever get to the point where terrorists are sweeping through your neighborhood you can show them you were on their side.

There is one thing missing from this article. Was a DNA test done to verify the alleged father is the one trying to gain custody of this child?
The alleged mother claims she doesn't know for sure who the father is.
The child's rights need to be addressed in the meantime. He needs a safe and secure environment, And upsetting his routine only to find out the alleged father is not the one will make it harder for him to trust anyone evere again.
MAKE SURE HE IS THE FATHER BEFORE FORCING THIS COUPLE TO TURN THE CHILD TO HIM AND THAT THE CHILD WILL BE IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT!!!!!

Excellent editorial, but I disagree with one item. Our government leadership did not "punt" the issue. They are clearly complicit, continuing what amounts to an apartheid system in the US. Government inaction assures the supply of cheap labor with minimal/no rights. Employers like Agriprocessors slurp up the additional profits in the meantime, and call in the feds to break up union organizing attempts (UFCW) or other threats to their gravy train. Mark my word - Agriprocessors will not suffer more than a temporary disruption of their production schedules.

This is down right ridiculous to ask of a business owner as we all know you can only control your own actions. I think this gentlemen has been more than cooperative with city of Davenport and at this point I feel they have asked him of something that can simply not be helped. And to take this further-they need to make up their mind first they ask for him to call and report incidents to the police and then on the other hand they turn around and use that against him by saying how many times he has had to call. Let the man run his business and let these fools take responsibility for their own actions.

The 1997 raids at IBP in Joslin were following a strike by workers at that plant. Immigration was called in by IBP in retaliation for the strike. The raids were directed at removing what the company thought were the troublemakers leading the strike. The editors must forget that strike and the strong support it had in this community. The solidarity and determination by those struggling workers in their fight for prescription drug benefits is an example of how difficult it is for workers to get a small share of the value they create.

My father use to say "I trust you, but I don't trust the world."
As I have gotten older (and became a parent myself) I understand that statement more and more. Just because you do what is right/noble/good/trustworthy doesn't mean that you will get the desired outcome of that you wont get hurt. That's life, that's the real world. As a parent we have been in the world longer than the child has (obviously), and teens should appreciate that experience (both the good and bad) that your parents have had. With that being said, parents also need to relay that experience to their kids. Parents need to make sure they share prior to the child testing the limits and the experiences they share need to be in balance (good and bad). Opening up creates bonds, trust, and communication that will often see you (both) through the teen years and create lasting bonds into adulthood.

John and Cindy know how to lead by example here are some facts. She is involved around the world clearing land mines -and travels to these countries on a detonation team and serves on their board. They have a 19 year old serving in Iraq , another son in the Naval Academy, a daughter recently graduated from Columbia Univ, an adopted daughter in high school, and a son who is the finance guy at Cindy's beer firm.
They have a Family Foundation for children's causes. I am surprised the media is so quiet about her attributes. She sounds more capable than Hillary or Obama. We would really get two for the price of one. A person with business and international experience. I'll bet she would know when people are laughing at her or shooting at her. I'm not saying they should hold him back by any means I believe kids should be allowed to excel if they display the need as long as it isn't forced. However in my experience (I'm so not young here) I have seen several accounts where these types of children are greatly lacking in social skills. To the point of being led into harms way by being too trusting of the older ones. Things that one would have learned along the way had they kept up with the same age group. Maybe the parents will be able to help him through those milestones?

Heres a few givens for almost ALL illegals here, and what we should do about it.
1st.-- You have worked and got paid in cash--thus no taxes paid from you to America. Taht means you have no respect for this country, its values, or its future. Americans pay taxes to support America...Plain and simple. For this, you will be deported with no jail time assuming you never do come back. If cought here again, 5 years Paco....Get Out!
2nd. You have worked and recieved a paycheck. This offence is even worse than the first one. Heres why: You used somone elses social security number, and stole either most of or all of thier identity. Your also going to be deported, and it you return and are captured, it's 10 long years behind bars for you.--Get Out!
3rd. And this one is by far the most discusting of all. You have taken advantage of the good will of the American People by signing up for government goodies and hand-outs shortly after sneaking in here. GET OUT!!!!!!!!

Emily; ....Wake up child " It’s almost better that we’re faced with it as teenagers instead of adults, because when you’re an adult, you’re on your own and more vulnerable". Re-read your statment and you might realize you have your shoes on backwards.
As your loving parents age, they will stop doing reckless things that they did as a child, because they know they have to be there for their children. As a father of six I gurantee you, I will not regress back into my good old days when the name of the teenage game was, "Do what feels good as long as you don't get caught." Do most parents run into their bedrooms and slam the door and say, "You really don't want to understand?" With age comes the question ; "How could I have said it better without hurting someones feelings."

Poor Timmy is all worried that John McCain does not care about the poppies standing tall in Afganistan. Only the losers on the other side of the aisle are asking that we leave that country and Iraq and come home and mind our own business within our borders. If you are so worried about when those poppies will be replaced by other crops, maybe you could start a charitable organization to ship Saffron bulbs to Afganistan. That is one well paying crop that is not illegal in that soverign Nation. I have also sent a letter to the Times about that very subject, however it has not been printed yet.
John McCain is the most experienced person running for that desk in the oval office who knows what war is all about. .................Read his books!
