DES MOINES - Danny Homan has been elected to another term as president of AFSCME Council 61, a union representing nearly 40,000 public and private sector employees in Iowa.
Homan, 56, was re-elected without opposition for the second time. He has been an AFSCME member since 1985, a year after going to work as a residential treatment adviser in Sioux City, his hometown. He went to work for the union in 1987 as a political organizer and worked as a union representative for 17 years before being elected president in 2005.
Also re-elected at the union's biennial meeting July 11-12 were Vice President Susan Baker of Cedar Falls, a drafter at University of Northern Iowa, and Secretary-Treasurer Kay Gill of Des Moines.
AFSCME Council 61, the largest public-sector union in Iowa, represents law enforcement and correctional officers, home health care and child care providers, firefighters and emergency responders, mental health workers, professional school staff and others.
