Quad-City churches recently sent postcards to our U.S. senators regarding health-care coverage. Coordinated by Quad-Cities Interfaith, cards said that health-care coverage should be available to all, be continuous and be affordable and sustainable for society.
Congregants signed and made some very interesting comments: “No more delays!” “Get your acts together and get this done!” Some were more specific: “I am a federal retiree and would like to see everybody have the plan I enjoy.” “My sister got sick, lost her job because of her illness, then lost her health coverage and is probably going bankrupt.”
Concern is not just for theoretical “other people.” The concern is for ourselves and those we love, and society in general. Jesus spent a lot of time in healing and health-care efforts. Story after story of people with fever, skin disease, blindness, menstrual problems, back problems are given in the Bible. And Jesus provided care to those who approached him.
So maybe we are not far from the mark when we make efforts to see that health-care coverage is readily available in America.
