DES MOINES — A little more than a week after Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign promised Iowa Democrats she would not campaign in states that broke party rules by scheduling early primary contests, Clinton held six events Monday in Florida.

Florida, along with Michigan, has considered plans to hold early primary contests that would break a scheduling rule set by the Democratic National Committee.

That rule protects the roles of states that hold early primary contests, including Iowa, which hosts the first-in-the-nation caucuses Jan. 14.

Florida’s plan to have a Jan. 29 primary was rejected by top Democratic officials last month.

The state has until later this month to come up with a new primary date, which means Florida is not yet considered to be breaking the rule.

Clinton spokesman Mark Daley said Clinton held six events in Florida on Monday, five of which were fundraising events and one public campaign event on senior issues.

Fundraising events in states that break the rules  are allowed under the pledge.

“We have every intention of upholding the pledge” the campaign made Sept. 1, Daley said.

Carrie Giddins, spokeswoman for the Iowa Democratic Party, said Clinton also did not violate the pledge because Florida is not yet considered noncompliant.

While Clinton’s campaigning  is not considered a technical violation of her pledge, some question her actions.

“It’s not immoral. It’s not improper, per se,” said Dave Nagle, the former Iowa Democratic chairman. “But it does raise the suspicion of how sincere they were when they said they wouldn’t campaign in those states.”

Democrat Barack Obama has fundraising events scheduled in Florida later this month, but not campaign events, said spokes-man Tommy Vietor, who draws a distinction between the two.

“Senator Obama has a handful of finance events scheduled in Florida, and is committed to fulfilling the pledge he signed to protect Iowa’s first-in-the-nation status,” Vietor said.

Democrat John Edwards also has upcoming fundraising events in Florida, but not campaign events, spokesman Dan Leistikow said.
