SABULA, Iowa — Law enforcement officials are still trying to piece together what happened early Sunday morning outside a bar, resulting in the shooting of a Sabula man.
Sabula Police Chief Josh Kilburg said they are working to determine a motive for the shooting, which happened at 1:30 a.m. Sunday outside the Lucky 7 Bar on Pearl Street.
David Zabransky, 46, of Palatine, Ill., is accused of using a shotgun to shoot Sheldon Woodhurst, 46, of Sabula in the stomach.
Woodhurst was taken to Mercy Hospital in Clinton and airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. His condition is not available.
Zabransky was also injured and taken to Clinton and Iowa City hospitals, where he was treated and released. Kilburg said Zabransky did not suffer a gunshot wound but would not elaborate on his injuries.
Zabransky has been charged with attempted murder and is in Jackson County Detention Center on $25,000 cash bond. He made an initial appearance Monday morning before Magistrate Corliss Baty, who left the bond at $25,000 for the Class B felony. The Public Defender’s office will be asked to represent Zabransky. In court documents, Zabransky said he had no job and listed no other personal information.
According to court documents, another man was arrested outside the bar at the same time. Robert Hoschbaum, 36, who had a listed address of Savanna, Ill., but told the magistrate he lived in LaCrosse, Wis., was charged with public intoxication, interference with official acts and disorderly conduct.
Court documents indicate Hoschbaum tried to force his way into the crime scene after being told to stop by law enforcement. He pushed Jackson County Deputy Chad Roeder, and two officers had to take him to the ground to keep him away.
The officers wrote that Hoschbaum was in an argument with Woodhurst in the Lucky 7 bar, leading to a “larger altercation” outside the bar.
