In search of unsinkable spirit

The 2008 Quad-City floods are memories for most. For others, they remain moldy basements, crumbled foundations and rutted landscapes that neither insurance nor the Federal Emergency Management Agency will cover.

That leaves the Quad-Cities’ unsinkable spirit to pitch in for the benefit of our community. This is no ethereal spirit. It’s the same vital force that responds generously for many causes.

Actually, many spirits have added support. Our newspaper, along with the Quad-Cities River Bandits, Quad-City Times Bix 7 and United Way of the Quad-Cities Area launched the Unsinkable Spirit campaign to provide hometown help for hometown problems. The response has been stirring.

Twenty-five area mayors — that’s all of them — are proclaiming Aug. 11 Unsinkable Spirit Day. Many businesses are joining with innovative promotions to support the fund. The River Bandits are donating half of ticket receipts that day. Lunardi’s Restaurant at Northpark is pitching in $5 for each diner served that day. Office Max and Minor League Baseball added their own contributions.

All profits from every Quad-City Times newspaper sold Aug. 11 in a store or from a vending box will go to the fund.

Any workplace, business or school can join as well with almost any fundraising idea. We’ve suggested asking employees to pitch in $1 to participate in a Quad-City wide casual dress workday Aug. 11.

Individuals may send contributions as well.

The money goes into a fund that will help people repair damages caused by river, stream and creek flooding and torrential downpours in April and June. Those events left heavy damage to comparatively few Quad-Citians.

We encourage those lucky enough to have avoided flood damage to help lift the Quad-Cities’ Unsinkable Spirit with a tax-deductible contribution to this fund.
