Well, the talent gene in the Wayans family isn’t as strong in the second generation. But at least this isn’t as bad as the so-called parodies by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, whose movies aren’t even spoofs.
The older Wayans brothers were behind the hit television series “In Living Color” and the fine “Scary Movie.” The younger generation (Damien Dante Wayans directs) has come up with a few skits — some of them lame, some of them pretty funny — and strung them together in a nod to the typical “Dance Flick” that comes along on the big screen every now and then.
I knew I was in for trouble when the first few minutes offered a dancer urinating in someone’s face. Ick. And lots of the spinning on the dance floor, of course, veers out of control in one way or another.
There are situations common to many dance movies, from “Step Up 2 the Streets,” to the classic “Fame.” For example, there’s the dance-off between two crews and the involvement of thugs who want the prize money.
There’s always a new girl in school. Megan (Shoshana Bush) is freshly grieving her mother, who was killed in a traffic accident on the way to Megan’s dance tryout. She ends up living with her dad in a squatter’s apartment and goes to Musical High School. There, she meets Thomas Uncle (Damon Wayans Jr.), a hip-hop dancer who needs to pay back gangster Sugar Bear (David Allen Grier, who surprisingly performs a terrific “Dreamgirls” parody despite the baggage of a fat suit).
Megan says she’s never going to dance again, but Thomas encourages her and shows her some moves on the dance floor. Of course they become a couple. And because they’re an interracial couple, they meet with disapproval.
Although a few scenes are truly funny, most of them aren’t. The “Naked Gun” filmmakers would tell you that you need a story on which to hang the skits. It’s not enough to merely reference other movies. The reference needs to be funny, too (something that’s overlooked in an unnecessary “Twilight” scene).
Maybe it’s worth a matinee or a rental, but it certainly isn’t worth planning an evening around. It’s simply OK — nothing that will have you laughing out loud or dancing for joy.
