Report: Ameren could have done better during 2006 storms

SPRINGFIELD — During a prolonged power outage caused by an ice storm in late 2006, Ameren missed thousands of phone calls and could have prevented some of the damage by improving its tree trimming practices, according to a lengthy report released this week.
The $1 million report by Pennsylvania-based Liberty Consulting Group and the Illinois Commerce Commission contained “some positive findings and many opportunities for improvement.”
The report examined Ameren’s response to the central Illinois ice storms
of November and December of 2006 and the heavy
wind storms that hit the state in July of the same year.
It recommended 157 specific suggestions for improvement.
“Despite the large number of areas” the company can improve on, the report
said, Ameren “acceptably planned, designed, constructed, and maintained
its electric delivery systems.”
Ameren spokesman Leigh Morris said the company, not tax dollars, paid for the report. Morris said most of the recommendations have either been completed or are in the process of being addressed.
