Good Friday morning, Quad-Cities.  At 6 a.m. it’s 45 degrees with fair skies. Today will be sunny with a high near 72 degrees with wind gusts as high as 25 mph. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 54.

The weekend looks to be a sunny one with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s before rain returns to the forecast on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Moline High School homecoming parade will hit the Avenue of the Cities this afternoon at 2 p.m. in the 3600 block of the Avenue of the Cities and will travel west to Wharton Field House. Avoid the area if you are in a hurry or stop, watch and enjoy if you are a Maroon.

Illinois State Police are again cautioning drivers that Illinois 84 at Interstate 80 is now an all way stop because of construction projects in the area. Drivers should slow down before coming to this intersection and remain alert while traveling through for those that may be unaware of the change in traffic signage.

Other recent Q-C road projects

• Bridge Avenue between East Colorado Street and East Dover Court is closed for sewer repairs. There will be signed detours at Bridge/Rusholme and Bridge/Central Park Avenue.

• Central Avenue in Bettendorf is being resurfaced. Two-way traffic will be maintained, but traffic delays could result where moving equipment is in progress. Watch for flagmen between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

• U.S. 61 in Scott County is reduced to one lane for maintenance work. Workers are doing joint and crack sealing from Locust Street in Davenport north to Scott County Road F-33. Travelers are being assisted through the work area by flaggers and a pilot car.

• Work on John Deere Road west of the 16th Street intersection. Work is being done one lane at a time to maintain traffic flow.

Road closings list

Those are just a few of  the numerous road repair projects going on in the Quad-Cities area. Check for local closings and closings across Iowa and Illinois before you head out this morning. If you see road projects that should be added to our road closings list, drop us an e-mail at newsroom@qctimes.com or give us a call at (563) 383-2235. Every 13 minutes, someone dies on our nation’s roadways

National statistics show that about 42,000 individuals die every year on our nation’s roadways. Up to 115 families mourn the loss of a loved one every day. If you break the statistics down even further, one fatality occurs every 13 minutes. Can you imagine a day with zero traffic fatalities? If you can, join the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) today to recognize Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day. The day encourages the public to take a greater stand in keeping themselves and their loved ones from becoming one of those statistics.

The goal is to unite the country in achieving one full day of zero traffic deaths by encouraging safer behavior and actions, and by promoting safer roadways.

“Motor vehicle fatalities are the leading cause of death for all Americans from 6 to 33 years old. Whether as a driver, passenger, pedestrian or cyclist, by working together in a concerted effort, we can make a difference to stop the carnage on our nation's roads,” said Scott Falb of the Iowa DOT.

In 2007, 445 fatalities were reported in Iowa. In October, there were 33 deaths, two of them on Oct. 10.

The good news is that by taking pro-active steps, the public can greatly reduce the odds of becoming a statistic.

“First and foremost, drive as if your life depends on it,” Falb said. “Driving defensively, obeying the posted speed limits, slowing down in bad weather and in special construction and school zones, and not drinking and driving are just a few examples of how drivers can reduce their chances of being in a crash.” Other important safety practices include buckling up every time on every trip, using appropriate child safety seats, wearing a helmet when cycling or skating, and crossing the street in crosswalks, Falb said.

Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day promotes:

• Safer driving behaviors: In 2003, speeding was a contributing factor in 31 percent of all fatal crashes — with 13,380 lives lost in such crashes. The economic cost of speeding-related crashes in the United States is estimated to be $40.4 billion per year. (Source: Traffic Safety Facts 2003 Speeding)

Everyone needs to buckle up, but parents especially need to talk to their teens. Teenagers have the highest death rate in motor-vehicle crashes of any age group. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 16- to 20-year-olds in the United States.

• Safer driving environments: Every $100 million invested in highway safety improvements will result in approximately 145 fewer traffic fatalities over a 10-year period. (Sources: NHTSA; Federal Highway Administration; and National Center for Health Statistics — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mortality Data 2001)

• Safer vehicles: Total vehicle miles traveled in the United States for 2006, the most recent year such data is available, topped 3 trillion miles. Proper vehicle maintenance plays an important role in reducing crashes. Check your tires for proper inflation pressure, tread wear and alignment. Winterize your vehicle if you live in a cold climate. Replace worn windshield wipers. If your vehicle has antilock brakes, operate them correctly by "stomping and steering" rather than pumping them.

Put on the Brakes on Fatalities Day is coordinated by a coalition of more than 40 national safety organizations; federal, state and local government agencies; and private sector companies working together to reduce the death and injury toll of motor vehicle crashes.
