CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Northern Iowa has in the last two months suspended 18 athletes from six sports who face a variety of charges, from possession of drug paraphernalia to underage drinking.
The athletes compete in football, men’s basketball, men’s track, softball, baseball and women’s swimming.
The most recent problems stemmed from two parties the weekend of Sept. 13, when 14 athletes in softball, baseball and women’s swimming were charged with possession of alcohol as a minor. The most serious incidents involved previously reported cases against football players facing charges including intoxication, drug paraphernalia and stolen-property.
Athletic director Troy Dannen acknowledged problems but says no one has been charged for nearly a month.
