CLINTON, Iowa — A fire early morning caused about $500,000 in damage to a biodiesel plant in Clinton.
Firefighters were called to the Nova Biosource Fuels plant at 5640 44th Ave. South just before 3 a.m. today to respond to a report of a fire in a stack at the plant, according to the Clinton Fire Department.
Firefighters from Clinton and Low Moor responded to the scene, and found fatty acid distillates and biodiesel fuel burning in a distilling distribution column, according to the fire department.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 7:18 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
One firefighter suffered a steam burn on his arm while fighting the fire.
Plant Manager Nate Baker said the plant was not operating at the time of the fire because it had been shut down for routine maintenance. The plant, which has 15 employees, is still operational, Baker said.
