Football

Galesburg 21, Alleman 14

The skinny: The Silver Streaks defeat the Pioneers for the second time in the past eight years — and first time since 2002 — in a game that was postponed from Friday night because of electrical problems at Van Dyke Field.

The keys: Big first-half plays carried Galesburg (2-2, 1-0 WB6). Quarterback Andrew Steck broke off a 75-yard TD run in the first quarter, and then passed 33 yards to Tanner Libby before the quarter ended.

The twist: For the second time in as many weeks, Pioneers sophomore Tim Boland entered the game in favor of junior Matt Noe, with Boland completing four of five passes for 83 yards, including a TD pass in the fourth quarter — to Noe.

Metro volleyball

Clinton Invitational

The skinny: Moline asserts itself as — arguably — the metro region’s best team after defeating one of the MAC’s favorites to win, Davenport Central, twice, including a three-set win in the finals.

The keys: Moline senior Halie Ecker asserted herself all over the court for the Maroons, averaging nearly 11 kills and three aces per match. Sophomore Marquisha Harris added 27 kills and was a blocking force, leading the way for Moline with 14.

The twist: Assumption had a strong round in pool play, going 3-0 with a three-set win over the host River Queens, but then fell to Central, 25-14 and 25-8, in the semis.

Rock Island Alleman double dual

The skinny: Quincy and Galesburg take a pair of duals from both Rock Island and Rock Island Alleman, with the Blue Devils moving to 4-0 in league play.

The keys: Junior Hannah Kvitle had 10 kills and 36 assists in the double-dip for Quincy (14-2 overall). Maddie Barnes had eight kills in the Rock Island match, while Brittany Houghton had six against the Pioneers.

The twist: Rock Island got as close as 19-18 in the second game, but the Blue Devils closed it out from there.

The quotes: “They knew that we weren’t doing our best, but they also know what the rest of the conference has. At any time, anyone can win. They just came out and proved today that they are the ones to do it.” – Quincy coach Barb Crist, to the Quincy Herald-Whig.

Dubuque Wahlert Invitational

The skinny: Bettendorf pushed host Wahlert to the brink in the first game before falling, 32-30, and then losing in two sets to the Golden Eagles.

The keys: Attacking was balanced for the Bulldogs, with 40 kills from Sydney Fleege, 31 from Ann Miller and 26 from Chrissie McGaffigan. McGaffigan also had 76 assists, 49 digs and six aces.

The twist: Bettendorf was 2-2 in pool play, but was second in the pool, advancing to the semifinals, where the Bulldogs defeated Dyersville Beckman to reach the final.

Metro cross country

Geneseo Invitational

The boys skinny: Moline picked up wins in the sophomore and junior divisions, with seconds in the senior and junior divisions to outdistance Rock Island, 210-297.

The girls skinny: A pitched battle between Sterling and Geneseo led to the Golden Warriors taking victory, 226-230.

The boys keys: Moline’s Jonathan Smith nearly pulled off the victory, finishing in 16 minutes, 11 seconds, just behind Streator’s Jon Richards. Sophomore Alex Stojanovic had the day’s fourth-fastest time overall — in any division — with a 16:43.

The girls keys: Balance carried the Golden Warriors, who finished no better than third in any of the four divisions. Meanwhile, Geneseo got a first in the senior division from Stephanie Kennett and a second in the junior division from Joann Chenoweth.

The boys twist: Though the Rocks were second, their top individual finisher in any flight was freshman Inyse Hakizimana, who was third.

The girls twist: Watch out for Dixon, which had the two fastest runners of the Richmond Hill course in sophomore Chelsea Sondgeroth (19:47) and younger sister Tiara (20:09).

Metro boys golf

Assumption Invitational

The skinny: It might be the first time this fall that Bettendorf has finished ahead of Davenport Central in a meet, as the Bulldogs defeated the Blue Devils by 11 shots in the seven-team meet.

The keys: Matt Solis went very low for Bettendorf, firing a round of 70. Solis was seven shots lower than Central’s No. 1, Ryan Schlueter.

The twist: Sure, Solis was hot, but Bettendorf also got a 77 from Jackson Hemberger and a pair of 80s as well, from Josh Beghtol and Sean Garrity.

Pekin Invitational

The skinny: Moline was fifth, 10 shots behind team champion Edwardsville, in the 24-team event at Lick Creek, finishing with a team score of 316.

The keys: Moline got consistency, if not a super-low round, from its scorers, led by Jon Grchan’s 78.

The twist: Galesburg was 11th – behind both the Maroons and Quincy – but Corey Verseman had the low local round, finishing with a 77.

Riverdale Invitational

The skinny: Alleman’s team score of 317 was good for a five-shot victory over AlWood/ROWVA at Maple Bluff GC in Geneseo. Fulton was third in the meet, with a 323.

The keys: For the second time at Maple Bluff, Alleman junior Peter Callas bagged a second-place finish, finishing 18 holes with a 3-over 75. After a subpar round earlier in the week, fellow junior Mark Benfield responded with a solid 77.

The twist: Though Aledo/Westmer was sixth overall as a team, the Green Dragons came up with the individual medalist, as senior Kyle McEwen shot an even-par 72.

Metro girls’ swimming and diving

Peoria Woodruff Invitational

The skinny: United Township finishes third, but one of the Illinois downstate’s strongest teams — Peoria Notre Dame — won every event.

The keys: UT finished in the top three in seven events, with the Panthers’ best finish coming in the 450-yard freestyle relay. Even in that event, however, the Irish defeated the Panthers by 6.39 seconds.

Lady Charger Invitational

The skinny: In a meet hosted by Champaign Centennial, Galesburg took third in the 13-team meet with 251 points.

The keys: Champaign area and Chicago suburban teams dominated the meet, but the Silver Streaks were able to score fairly well in the margins, particularly in the freestyle relays, where the Streaks were second in the 200 free relay and third in the 400 free relay.

Metro girls tennis

Galesburg Invitational

The skinny: Alleman finishes 3rd, Geneseo 5th, United Township 6th and the host Silver Streaks 8th in the eight-team meet, won by Morton.

The keys: Pioneer sophomore Allie DeRoo was the local area’s only titlist, defeating a Dunlap player in straight sets to win at No. 2 singles. Alleman teammates Hannah Schrader and Samantha Good were second at No. 1 doubles.

The twist: Geneseo’s Sam Yerkey and Lizzie Wolak also finished second, at No. 2 doubles; UT was paced by a fourth-place finish from Elizabeth Dokas at No. 1 singles.

New Trier Invitational

The skinny: In one of the toughest tournaments in the state, Moline competed against some of the state’s best teams.

The keys: All of the Maroons’ three doubles teams won at least one match, as did No. 1 singles player Kathleen Bracke.

Area volleyball spikes

Sherrard wins Judy Richmond Classic: Despite a pool-play loss to AlWood, Sherrard rallied to defeat Ashton-Franklin Center, 25-21, 25-16, for first place.

Indians tops at Marquette: Camanche won five matches, dropping only one set in pool play to win the eight-team meet, but the Indians had to defeat Preston twice to do it. Preston was the only team to take a set off Camanche on the day.

Erie tops Princesses: Erie didn’t lose a set in bringing home top honors at the Princeville tournament, defeating Annawan, Stark County and Peoria Christian before handling the host Princesses in the final, 25-18 and 25-15.

Other area highlights:

Galesburg boys XC wins Dunlap meet: Gabe Moreno was the individual champion, defeating small-school powerhouse Parker Thompson of Tremont, leading the Silver Streaks to a 47-point team performance, 17 better than runnerup Metamora.

Pettie wins, Rock Falls girls 2nd: Sherrard senior Shelbie Pettie won the Bureau Valley Invitational, outdistancing Mendota’s Haley Sack by 17 seconds for the individual title. Victoria Castaneda was third for Rock Falls, leading them to a runnerup finish behind small-school power Elmwood/Brimfield, 60-69.

Titan golfers 4th at Havana: Shane Creighton finished second individually with a round of 73, as Monmouth-Roseville finished with a team score of 331.
