Girls tennis
Rock Island Red Invitational
The skinny: Moline won three flights (No. 1 singles, Nos. 2&3 doubles) and finished second in the other two to win the seven-team meet, which was moved indoors to the Quad City Tennis Club in Moline.
The keys: Maroon senior Kathleen Bracke won her first high school tournament in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Richwoods’ Christina Chang. Senior Sarah Marlier reunited with former doubles partner Hannah Helms for a win over Alleman, and – playing varsity for the first time due to other Maroons taking the ACT – Kayleigh Sanchez and Katie Field won at No. 3 doubles.
The twist: Alleman finished second, with No. 1 doubles team Hannah Schrader and Samantha Good defeating Moline’s Samantha Tonn and Jenna Jackson in a 10-8 third-set supertiebreaker. Tonn and Jackson had won the first set, 6-0, before the Pioneer pair rallied.
The quotes: “Our goal going in was to take the invite title and we accomplished that goal. We saw some firsts today…Bracke had never won a singles invitational before, and our No. 3 doubles team played its first invitational and won. That’s something we’re excited about.” – Moline coach Jason Jones.
“It is kind of a challenge (playing indoors). It’s hotter and more stuffy, but it keeps you loose. Hannah and I played doubles half the season last year and it was good to play with her again. She’s a good player.” – Sarah Marlier.
“They knew that this week they would have to step it up, and then came out and lost 6-0 (in the first set). They just worked together and worked through it.” – Alleman coach Marcia Cornelis, on Schrader and Good’s doubles title victory.
Volleyball
North Scott Invitational
The skinny: Bettendorf routed Central DeWitt in the semifinals and then polished off City High in straight sets, 25-15 and 25-19, to win the meet.
The keys: Senior Chrissie McGaffigan played like an all-stater for the entire day, leading the Bulldogs in kills (30), aces (seven), digs (29) and assists (75).
The twist: Running a 6-2 should work well for the Bulldogs, as Natalie Weis (28 assists) was more than capable in spotting for McGaffigan as the Bettendorf distributor of the ball.
Geneseo Invitational
The skinny: Bloom Township paid a visit from Chicago’s south suburbs, and the roadtrip paid off in a tournament win, as Bloom defeated Rock Island, 27-25 and 25-12, in what was the effective championship match of the meet. Rocky went 4-1, Hall Township 3-2, the host Maple Leafs were 2-3 and Sherrard was 0-5.
The keys: For the second-place Rocks, it was the return of Genesis Johnson. Johnson turned her ankle during the Rocks’ Western Big Six loss to Moline, and returned Saturday to bag 38 kills and 12 blocks on the day.
The twist: Sarah Bebber emerged as perhaps the Rocks’ top DS, with 43 digs on the day, and Bebber was good for a team-high 15 aces as well. Kayla Daugherty (24 kills) and Erika Wubben (20) gave the Rocky setters other options besides Johnson.
Wethersfield Invitational
The skinny: Long a doormat in the Three Rivers Conference volleyball scene, Prophetstown had one of its best volleyball days in the past decade, defeating Alleman, the host Flying Geese and Aledo to reach the title game, where the Prophets fell in two games to Chillicothe IVC.
The keys: Taking care of business in pool-play didn’t hurt. Too, neither did having IVC and long-time OIympic Conference power Orion, one of western Illinois’ strongest programs year in and year out, in the other round of pool play.
The twist: A strong pair of setters – Sami Mitton and Kelly Hutton, who combined for 76 assists on the day – led Orion to third place in the tournament. After falling to IVC in the semis, the Chargers swept Alleman, 21-14 and 21-19, to win the third-place match.
Linn-Mar Invitational
The skinny: Losing freshman sensation Emily Podschweit proved a critical loss for the Spartans on Saturday, as both Linn-Mar and Marion took wins over PV.
The keys: With Podschweit out, new ace servers needed finding in a hurry, and Nicole Meighan – who had 10 aces in PV’s first match – could be one of them. Courtney Linn had nine in that match, adding two more against Linn-Mar.
The twist: Annie Czarnecki led the team in kills in each match, with 29 on the day.
Wilton Invitational
The skinny: Durant blew through the six-team meet, losing just one set along the way.
The keys: The Wildcats needed three sets to knock off Mid-Prairie – one of three 3-2 teams in the meet – but got the job done, winning 15-11 in the third set.
The twist: Host Wilton, which lost 21-15 and 21-12, did a better job with Mid-Prairie than did the champion Wildcats, handling their Cedar Valley Conference foes 21-16 and 21-18.
LaMoille/Ohio Tournament
The skinny: Annawan rallied from a pool-play loss to Ashton-Franklin Center to win the tournament, defeating Aurora Central Catholic in the semis and the Raiders in three sets for the title.
The keys: Staying patient in the title game was key for the Bravettes, who lost the first set of the title match, 25-20, to A-FC.
