Volleyball

Central def. Muscatine, 3 sets to 0

The skinny:
After starting the week with a sub-.500 record, the Blue Devils open Mississippi Athletic Conference play with a straight-set win over the Muskies, 25-14, 25-19, 25-16.

The keys: Allie Corbin’s all-round game was a perfect way to open the season for Central. Corbin had 16 kills to lead all attackers, but it was her play on the back line (two aces, eight digs) that helped smooth out the Blue Devils’ MAC opener.

The twist: Central called upon three different setters to run the offense. Taylor Sharoian – a West transfer – led the way with 12 assists, but Shaina Barnes added nine and sister Kendra Barnes six.

West def. North Scott, 3 sets to 2

The skinny:
In a match important for both teams to set the right tone, West had to go the distance, defeating the Lancers 15-13 in the fifth set.

The keys: Patience, for the Falcons. North Scott won the first two sets, but the strong play of Alexis Johnson (11 kills, 25 digs) helped bring West back.

The twist: Serve-receive will be on the docket for both teams today in practice. North Scott’s top servers combined for 14 aces, West’s for eight.

Assumption def. Burlington, 3 sets to 0

The skinny:
Defense proved critical in the Lady Knights’ 25-10, 25-18, 25-15 MAC-opening rout over the Grayhounds.

The keys: Burlington bagged nearly 40 percent of its points through outright kills – a fairly high percentage – but Assumption’s serve was way more than the Grayhounds could handle. The Lady Knights had 15 aces, seven off the serve of Emma Garner.

The twist: A team relying on its passing like the Lady Knights did Tuesday night usually have trouble finding a strong attacker, but Annie Motto and her eight kills were up to the challenge.

Clinton def. North, 3 sets to 0

The skinny:
Sarah Wenzel was too strong no matter where she was on the court for the River Queens, who romped to a 25-19, 25-10, 25-19 victory.

The keys: Wenzel’s jumping ability – she’s one of the state’s best long and high jumpers – served her well in a 15-kill night.

The twist: North displayed a scrappy defense against the Clinton attack, with Renee Heileg picking up 18 digs and Lizz Goekke 14 – impressive totals for a three-set match.

Moline def. Sterling, 2 sets to 0

The skinny:
Junior Sarah Fetter asserted herself in all aspects against the Golden Warriors, as the Maroons won their home opener, 25-16, 25-9.

The keys: Fetter assumed the role of Moline’s No. 1 setter, with 12 assists, but added five kills and two service aces to the Maroon cause.

The twist: Think senior Halie Ecker can’t play the back line? Think again, with four digs in a match where Sterling had trouble mustering any kind of sustained attack.

Geneseo def. Galesburg, 2 sets to 1

The skinny:
The Maple Leafs overcame a strong effort from Western Illinois signee Katie Hosteng, using six aces and seven digs from Kelsey Burress to win 25-20 in the third game.

The keys: Defense was the difference for Geneseo. Katie Lenz’s 10 digs were six more than any on the Galesburg side.

The twist: Hosteng had eight kills, six blocks, and six aces for the Silver Streaks.

West Delaware def. Central DeWitt, 3 sets to 2

The skinny:
The Sabers rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a 25-13 fourth-set victory, only to see their WaMaC rivals dominate the fifth game.

The keys: Strong front-line play kept the Sabers in it, as Ellie Williams and Rachel Henning combined for 19 kills and Hannah Carlson and Shayla Carlin combined for 10 blocks.

Durant def. West Branch, 3 sets to 0

The skinny:
Makenzie Meyer, McKinsey Reid and Renee Tesrow combined for 21 kills as Durant romped to an easy Cedar Valley Conference (it still seems strange to write) victory, 25-12, 25-21 and 25-13.

The keys: Emily Andrey provided a strong back-row counterpart for Durant, with 13 digs and three aces.

Cross country

Tipton Invitational

The boys skinny:
Mt. Vernon put three runners into the top 10 to take first in the 19-team invitational meet, outpointing Iowa City Regina 59-79.

The girls skinny: The co-op team of Mt. Vernon-Lisbon used balance to overcome Marion, 115-143, to win the 17-team girls’ race.

The boys keys: Assumption’s Tommy Harris (2nd, 17:09.47) fueled a third-place Knight team effort, as Assumption finished with 139 points.

The girls keys: In a strong individual battle, Northeast’s Morgan Casey pulled away from Assumption’s Mary Menster to win the race, finishing the 4-kilometer course in 15:23.44.

The boys twist: Host Tipton finished sixth, but senior Eric Thien brought home the individual title with a time of 16:48.70.

The girls twist: Better known for her sprinting in track season, Tipton’s Missy Miller proved equally capable over longer distances, finishing third in 15:51.46.

Geneseo Quint

The boys skinny:
Moline used the strongest pack to win the five-team event at Richmond Hill Park, where four of the five entrants will run in 10 days at the Geneseo Invitational.

The girls skinny: Host Geneseo held off Alleman’s charge with a 3-4-8-10-12 pack to win, 37-49, over the Pioneers.

The boys keys: Senior Jonathan Smith finished second for the Maroons, finishing in 16:07, but it was the pack that followed (Nic Mizeur 6th, Ian Miller 7th, Michael Castel 8th and Alex Stojanovic 9th) that sealed the team win.

The girls keys: Joann Chenoweth and Stephanie Kennett were just one second apart, finishing 3rd and 4th, respectively, to lead the Maple Leafs.

The boys twist: Alleman’s Tim Hird made it 3-for-3 in individual wins, finishing in a very strong 15:54 clocking over the hilly 5-kilometer Geneseo course.

The girls twist: Alleman’s Kathleen Hogan bagged her second event win, this time by more than a minute over Moline’s Emily Wolbers. Hogan finished in 19:50.

Girls swimming & diving

Bettendorf 137, North 45

The skinny:
Bettendorf won every event but one, going 1-2-3 in four events for the MAC dual victory.

The keys: Sarah Thompson, Rebecca Alves, Caitlen Campbell, Paula Coryn and Rachael Shermer all won three events for the Bulldogs. Alves brought home individual wins in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 backstroke.

The twist: North’s lone event win came in diving, where Marguerite DelVecchio topped the Bulldogs’ Linnea Arndt by 4.25 points.

Galesburg 145, Rock Island 38

The skinny:
Galesburg swept every event except for one, dominating the Western Big Six road dual.

The keys: Lauren Albert put on a strong show for the Silver Streaks, with solid wins over teammates in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Albert also led off the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays with solid 50-yard legs.

The twist: Rock Island got an event victory in the 100 breaststroke, with Abby Sloan winning that race by 2.34 seconds.

Clinton 101, West 84

The skinny:
In one of the night’s more competitive duals, the River Queens won the last five races to pull away for the dual win.

The keys: Libby Hess was a powerhouse down the stretch for Clinton, winning the 100 breaststroke by 11.67 seconds – one of the larger margins of victory in that event in the early season – and coming back in the next event to anchor Clinton’s 400 freestyle relay win.

The twist: West’s Hailey Kitzman – who won twice for the Falcons – denied Clinton’s Larissa Wilden an opportunity to join Hess as a four-event winner. Kitzman touched out 1.30 seconds faster than Wilden in the 50 freestyle.

Sterling 107, Moline 79

The skinny:
Sterling won the final two events, going 1-2 in both the 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay to take the dual victory.

The keys: Ann Wolber won four events for the Golden Warriors, with swims in all three winning Sterling relays and an individual first in the 100 freestyle.

The twist: Not only was Wolber the night’s only four-event winner, she also earned bragging rights over sister Sarah, who had three wins and a third in the 200 IM.

Muscatine 110, PV 73

The skinny:
Freestyle relay strength went the Muskies’ way, as Muscatine won both the 200 and 400 free relays for the MAC dual win.

The keys: Muscatine’s Hillary Cale was a three-event winner, taking individual firsts in the distance freestyle events (200 and 500) and adding a solid leadoff leg on the 400 free relay.

The twist: PV was in it until the end, winning five individual events – Marissa Belk, Sarah Boyer and Allie Stecker all swam on the 200 medley and won individual events as well – but the Spartans were swept in the 200 IM and 400 free relay.

Boys golf

Moline triangular

The skinny:
The host Maroons get three sub-40 rounds to defeat Rock Island by 21 shots, 154-175, with Geneseo third at 178.

The keys: Moline had a consistent pack and went low, with DJ Phelps’ 1-over 37 earning medalist honors. Thomas Lindauer and Nick Edwards added 38s as well.

The twist: No. 4 Mitchell Medinger’s 41 would have been the top Rock Island score and would have tied for top honors with Geneseo’s Taylor Mighell.

Galesburg triangular

The skinny:
The host Streaks break the 150 barrier, with four sub-40 rounds en route to a 148 team score, 10 shots ahead of Monmouth-Roseville. AlWood/ROWVA was third with 162.

The keys: Freshman Kelby Rescinito continues to impress, with a 1-under 35 taking medalist honors.

The twist: The cool, pleasant weather in the area led to Lake Bracken yielding several low rounds (eight golfers on all three teams were sub-40).

Girls golf

Geneseo triangular

The skinny:
Kelsey Lieving earns co-medalist honors for the host Maple Leafs, but Alleman gets more consistency, winning by 16 shots (190-206) over the Leafs, with Rock Island third at 209.

The keys: Katie Moore and Abby Frideres battled hard for No. 1 honors among the Pioneers, with Moore’s 43 sharing medalist with Lieving, and Frideres carding a 44.

The twist: Kelsey Kernan assumed the No. 1 spot Tuesday for the third-place Rocks, with a 44 that was one shot out of medalist honors.
