Illinois girls golf

Class A

Top returning state placewinner:
Gianna DeGrazia, Driscoll, Sr. (2nd last year). No returning local state qualifiers.

Defending team champion: Effingham St. Anthony.

Top returning local individuals: Abby Ball, Knoxville, So.; Alexandrea Martens, Orion, Sr.; Hannah Rowen, Stark County, Jr. (individual sectional qualifiers).

Top returning local teams: Aledo/Westmer (regional champion last year); Rockridge (team sectional qualifier).

Snapshot: Although Aledo/Westmer lost their top three scorers to graduation, the Green Dragons still have three back from last year’s regional-title team. This year, the local team to beat in Class A might be Rockridge, which returns four starters from last year’s regional runner-up. Juniors Hannah McManus and Tia Fuhr are off to solid starts already this year for the Rockets. AlWood/ROWVA might be a possible team to advance to sectionals this year, with senior Jaclyn Cahill a potential individual qualifier.

Class AA

Top returning state placewinner:
Lauren English, Normal U-High, Soph. (2nd last year).

Top returning individual state qualifier: Ember Schuldt, Sterling, Jr. (T-27th last year).

Defending team champion: Normal U-High.

Other top returning local individuals: Ashlen Lincoln, Sr., Rock Island; Abby Frideres, Jr., Alleman; Abbey Heck, Sr., Galesburg; Courtney Gieseman, Alleman, Jr. (individual sectional qualifiers); Kelsey Lieving, Geneseo, Sr. (part of team regional champion last year).

Top returning local teams: Geneseo (regional champion); Moline (third at team regionals).

Snapshot: The Maple Leafs might have a hard time repeating as regional champion after losing five varsity starters to graduation. Peoria Notre Dame, which was second a year ago at regionals, could be the team to win, but the more likely choice is Moline, which returns five starters off last year’s third-place regional team. To the north, Sterling could be a force to contend with. Last year, the Golden Warriors were able to contend with stronger teams thanks to Schuldt’s individual power. Now, all of their top four golfers are a year more experienced. Longer shots, from a team standpoint, include the Rocks and Pioneers, who have shown good consistency early.

Meets to watch: Normal Community Invitational, September 13; Galesburg Invitational, September 27; Western Big 6 meet, September 29.
