Troy Biladeau accomplished the main thing he wanted to do in his first season as the head coach of the Quad-City Steamwheelers.
He made the playoffs.
But in his second year at the helm of the local arenafootball2 franchise, Biladeau said he hopes and plans to do much more than that.
The Steamwheelers announced Monday that Biladeau will be back for the team’s 10th anniversary season, and he immediately indicated that just making the playoffs won’t be enough this time.
“While we accomplished our goal of making the playoffs last year, we wanted to do more,’’ Biladeau said. “My goal is to build off of last year’s accomplishments and put another exciting team on the field that can compete for an ArenaCup.”
Biladeau took over the head coaching job last season after serving as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2007, and he led the Steamwheelers to an 8-8 regular-season record. The team set several franchise records, finishing second in the af2 in passing offense, third in total offense. However, it was 26th in total defense, and 27th in scoring defense, allowing 55.6 points per game.
Shawn Brown, the Wheelers’ vice president/general manager, said he was satisfied with Biladeau’s debut season.
“We asked him to bring in a group of quality guys that would be great role models for the community and also good players on the field,’’ Brown said. “He did exactly what he was asked to do, and we look forward to seeing him build off of last season.’’
The building process will begin when the Wheelers hold their first open tryouts Oct. 25 at the OS Sports Complex in Davenport.
“An open tryout is a good opportunity for guys from the region to come in and get looked at by one of our coaches,” Biladeau said.. “Last year we found several guys that we invited to camp based on the open tryout, and two of them made the squad.’’
