New York City
Police involved in shootings are required to undergo alcohol tests after firing a weapon in the line of duty. Bills in the state legislature would require drug and alcohol testing of officers within three hours of a shooting. Another would require investigations to be recorded.
Denver
A Firearms Discharge Review Board comprised of police division chiefs reviews the investigation to determine accountability, and also to refine police response techniques. The city this month published a 143 page study that revises police shooting policies.
Chicago
A Tribune series on police shooting investigations shows lax oversight of investigations.
Fairfax County, Va.
Police released a 41 page report on a January 2006 shooting.
