Figge to funerals: What bugs you?

MAYBE it’s the heat, but Quad-Citizens are really bugged. After space this week about six wishes I had for the Quad-Cities, there has been plenty sounding off. Amy Chung of Bettendorf wishes I’d begin something called, “You know what really bugs me?”

So, here it is — the beginning of “You know what really bugs me?”

Here is what really bugs Amy. Let’s hear from you.

“When I moved here from Madison, Wis., with my family, the first thing that struck me about the Figge was its lack of visible art when you entered the building,” she writes. “Perhaps the vast space and streamlined look was supposed to be the art, but where was the grand painting, the enormous sculpture or the larger-than-life textile? (Even a gorgeous, landscaped front garden!)

“I have a bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s degree in fine and decorative arts from Sotheby’s in London. I have never set foot in a museum or gallery, in all my world travels, that did not have a welcome piece of work to entice your eyes.

“The last time I was at the Figge, for the Golden Gala Fundraiser, the space was taken up with tables. But even the most glorious art glass chandelier would be better than the empty space I met on my first steps.

“IN TERMS OF FUNERALS ... I wish people would dress accordingly to attend a funeral or visitation. I have been to three in the past two years and am aghast every time. I am 33 years old and even though youth is on my side, I am the one in the appropriate conservative below-the-knee skirt. I am wearing darker colors and carrying a quiet handbag. I am wearing nice dress shoes devoid of plastic, rhinestones or rubber.

“I cannot tell you how embarrassed I was when I saw (you may not believe it!) red patent flip-flops on an adult professional, jeans, a frayed-hem white miniskirt, silver lamé (really!) sequins, push-up bras, no bras, halter tops and Hawaiian shirts at a funeral.

“Mind you, these were on adults who should know better and it was not at a theme funeral! In my mind, respect runs deeper than just showing up to pay your respects. It comes through in one’s clothing and accessories. And the silver lamé and Hawaiian shirt were worn by members of the dead person’s immediate family.

“I love fashion and believe people can wear these things at the appropriate time and place but not when an open casket is an arm-length away.”

Bugged by cell phones at the checkout

“I work in a retail situation and wish people would exercise cell phone etiquette,” says Sue Welty, Davenport.

“On a daily basis, customers will chat away on their cell phones while I am trying to do my job. What is one to do when trying to approach a customer when they are talking about the weather, little Jimmy’s ballgame, or a recipes for a new salad?

“Often, I am trying to complete a sale at the counter when a cell phone call comes in and the customer answers the phone, only to ignore the rest of the transaction while I am attempting to get them on their way. It’s especially rude when there are other customers waiting for assistance.”
