OXFORD, Iowa  — Thousands of potatoes spilled onto Interstate 80 after a trucker swerved to miss another vehicle.

The Iowa State Patrol says truck driver Cory Berg of West Fargo, N.D., was headed east Wednesday afternoon when he swerved and left the highway. He hit a guardrail and bridge support, then tipped over, spilling 44,000 pounds of potatoes over I-80, a nearby road and a ditch.

The truck is owned by Altendorf Trucking, of Minto, N.D.

Company representative Dave Rogalla  says the truck was hauling the potatoes from Idaho to Michigan. He said this morning that the potatoes are probably ruined.

   Berg wasn't injured.
