Call this a different kind of OTA.

Houston Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels returns to his hometown of Maquoketa, Iowa, on Saturday for his second annual football camp, an event he describes as a nice break from the offseason training activities (OTAs) in which every NFL player is expected to participate.

Better still, he gets to catch up with people close to him for a couple of weeks before training camp.

“I only come home once a year,” he said. “It’s always for two weeks around the Fourth of July, so it’s the best time to be in Iowa. It’s not too hot yet so it’s just about perfect.

“And I do love coming home to see family and friends so I’m just getting back now.”

Normally, the Iowa State graduate would be back in Iowa for Tim Dwight’s football camp in Iowa City, but that camp was canceled because of the rain. He said Dwight has hosted a very popular three-day camp that attracts upwards of 500 young football players.

Rosenfels’ camp lasts one day, with morning and afternoon sessions. It’s focused on skill positions and will feature some familiar names as coaches.

Among them, current Cyclones quarterback Austen Arnaud, former Rosenfels teammates Joe Woodley and Nick Linder, and current Maquoketa coach Kevin Bowman will be at the camp to provide support, as will former Iowa standout and NFL kick returner Dwight.

“I get to have a pretty good mix of guys still playing and guys coaching in college,” he said. “Last year was our first year, and I like just the one-day format. Kids can take things they learn and go work on themselves (after the camp). I think everyone had a really good time.”

The camp features a pair of two-and-a-half-hour practices separated by a lunch break. Rosenfels said there will be some work with running plays as well as some other drills to work on.

“I try to get a lot in one day,” he said. “It’s not like we’re out conditioning kids, just offering some pretty simple drills they can work on. We’re not there to wear them out, just try to teach them something.”

Of equal importance, Rosenfels gets to give back to the high school football program that started him on his road to the NFL. Every dollar of every camper’s $50 goes back to the Maquoketa football program.

“It’s incredible for us. Here’s a guy that’s about as homegrown as possible from the rural Maquoketa area, had an outstanding college career and had a phenomenal year last year (with the Texans),” Bowman said. “He’s coming back for his camp, and all proceeds go back to the football program. I couldn’t ask for anything else.”
