DES MOINES — The first half of 2008 is one for the record books in Iowa — for wet weather.
As of late Thursday after another gully washer, state climatologist Harry Hillaker estimated the statewide average was 23.8 inches of precipitation. That tops the previous record of 23.55 inches in 1951.
That pushed the first half of 2008 into first place in the record books, which date to the late 1800s.
And more rain is falling. Early this morning, thunderstorms were dumping heavy rain on much of the state including the Quad-City region. The National Weather Service estimated up to 2-3 inches of rain had fallen in about an hour in Keokuk and Washington counties.
More rain is in both the state and local forecast. A cold front will move across the region today, producing showers and thunderstorms, with heavy rain possible into Saturday morning.
Because of the chance of continued heavy rain today, a flash flood watch remains in effect for the Quad-City region this evening. The National Weather Service reports that rainfall totals of 1.5 to 3 inches of rain is possible.
A flash flood watch means that flash flooding is possible.
LOCAL FORECAST: Today will can expect more showers and thunderstorms after 7 a.m. Some of these storms could produce heavy rainfall. The high will be near 84 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms likely will continue through the evening with a low around 65 degrees.
Saturday there is a 20 percent chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. The chance of precipitation increases to 30 percent in the evening. The high will be near 80 degrees.
On Sunday there is a 30 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m.
