Three men being questioned about a Rock Island homicide were charged with multiple counts Tuesday stemming from a high-speed police chase through Davenport streets Monday evening.
The chase began after officers identified one of four men in a car as a suspect in the Sunday shooting of Larrion Wellington at 5th Street and 15th Avenue in Rock Island, according to Scott County court affidavits. Wellington died Monday morning.
None of the suspects were charged in connection with Wellington’s death as of
Tuesday.
Rock Island police Capt. Scott Harris said detectives questioned the men arrested following the Davenport chase, but said there are no arrest warrants pending in the case. He said officers have others they want to question as well.
“We’re talking to everybody who may have been down there,” he said, “anybody who may have seen something.”
Jerome Wilson, 23, of Rock Island was charged with eluding, driving while barred and several other traffic violations. He was driving the car at the beginning of the pursuit.
Darryl Bernard Shears Jr., 24, of Davenport was arrested and is charged with eluding, as well as interference with official acts and several other charges.
A third man, Terrico Owens, 24, of Davenport is charged with possession of crack cocaine, a drug tax stamp violation and interference with official acts. He swallowed some of the drug and then fled when the chase ended, police said.
It is unclear what happened to the fourth person, and which of the four was the suspect in the homicide.
Owens has a previous conviction in Rock Island County Circuit Court for a July 2003 shooting where he injured
another man.
According to police reports:
About 7:25 p.m. Monday, officers from the Davenport Police Department learned that a homicide suspect was at 1026 N. Marquette St. in a dark-colored Chevy Impala. While they were waiting for more units to arrive, the car left the house with the suspect in it. A pursuit began, with Wilson driving, police said.
The chase exceeded the speed limit by at least 25 mph, officials said.
At the corner of Dixwell and Howell streets, the car slowed down and Wilson traded places with Shears, police said.
The car crashed into a curb near Warren Street and Central Park Avenue. Wilson ran from the car, but was ultimately arrested.
Shears also fled the car. He was seen walking in the 2500 block of Glen Place. He declined to obey police requests that he get down on the ground and he was pepper sprayed. That did not impact him. He was then subdued with a Taser, police said
One police officer was injured with pepper spray in the face and a bruised wrist.
Davenport Police Lt. Paul Sikorski said two of the three captured chase suspects were taken to area hospitals for treatment, one for ingesting drugs. He had no details on why the other suspect required medical care.
Rock Island County Coroner Sharon Anderson said an autopsy Tuesday revealed that Wellington died of hemorrhagic shock from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. An inquest is pending.
Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Rock Island police at (309) 732-2677 or Crime Stoppers at (309) 762-9500. Anyone with information about the chase Monday night in Davenport is asked to call Davenport police at (563) 326-6125.
