The City of Bettendorf estimates the 2008 flood left $666,000 worth of damage to city infrastructure – the majority of which came in a downpour and not the Mississippi River.

City Administrator Decker Ploehn said officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, surveyed the city’s damage Friday.

He said most of the damage occurred when the 400 block of 4th Street buckled from the rainstorm the night of June 12. “The water took parts of the street and pushed it down to River Drive,” he said.

Other items reported to FEMA included damage to the city’s bike path near Greenwood Avenue and the city-owned Palmer Hills Golf Course. Ploehn said the torrential rains blew manhole covers off on the golf course, sending some sewage onto the course.

The damage estimate does not include any damage incurred by any Bettendorf homeowners.
