The Quad-City International Airport has received federal funding for two expansion projects including one that will rebuild the airport’s main runway and an entrance road expansion already under way.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $3.289 million grant to the airport for its runway rehabilitation project. The award was announced Tuesday by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.
In addition, the airport has been awarded a $1.3 million grant to expand its access road. The Federal Aviation Administration award was announced Tuesday by U.S. Rep. Phil Hare, D-Ill.
Bruce Carter, the airport’s aviation director, said the entrance road is part of the airport’s new $3.1 million parking lot expansion.
Valley Construction began the work in April. The secondary airport entrance, which has been closed since then, will reopen to inbound traffic July 4. The outbound lane should open in mid-July.
At a meeting Tuesday, the airport authority approved a $2.2 million bid by Brandt Construction for a part of the runway expansion. Brandt will build a temporary runway, Taxiway P, which must be in place before work can begin on rehabilitating the airport’s main runway, Runway 9-27.
In addition, the authority approved a $3.076 million bid by McCarthy Improvement Co. for replacing concrete along the west portion of Runway 9-27.
Carter said the airport will spend $28 million over the next four years on its construction projects.
