Add rail traffic to the modes of transportation being complicated by the floodwaters filling Iowa’s creeks and rivers.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, or DOT, several rail lines report that they have been — or soon will be — affected by the flooding.
In the Quad-City area, the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad expected to be out of service Thursday in Davenport, Muscatine and Columbus Junction due to water over the tracks.
The DOT said several rail lines across the state have been washed out. While others remain open, they are operating under speed restrictions.
Across the state, Union Pacific’s main lines near Tama have been closed because of water over the tracks and considerable washout. The railroad’s north-south line through Des Moines also is closed. Likewise, the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway Co.’s main line is shut down.
The DOT said the railroad companies are assisting each other to reroute traffic where possible. Others are sending emergency shipments of rip-rap, ballast and other resources.
The DOT also said Thursday that it has suspended the issuance of oversize permits that would involve routing east of Interstate 35 in Iowa from the Minnesota to the Missouri state lines. Trucker hauling oversize loads will be asked to park them in a safe location until the situation eases.
