Romero named Augie MVP

Senior Rafael Romero has been named the John R. Olson Most Valuable Player for the Augustana College men’s tennis team.
Romero went 20-12 at No. 1 singles this season while earning All-CCIW honors for the third consecutive year.
Sophomore Chris Mullin was named the Vikings’ most improved player, while junior Greg Ruth won the most inspirational award. Freshman Kyle Doyle was the newcomer of the year.
For the women, sophomore Jenna Richardson was named Augie’s most valuable player after going 18-11 at No. 1 singles and earning second-team all conference honors.
Freshman Sheri Hendricks was the most improved for the women’s team, sophomore Emily Doemland the most inspirational and freshman Tricia Sapio the newcomer of the year.
Locals earn academic honors from IIAC
Former DeWitt standout Kelsey Steffens and former Geneseo star Brian Chenoweth along with Riverdale graduate Guy Dierikx were among 11 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) student-athletes named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII college division track and field/cross country teams.
Steffens, who attends Wartburg, was named to the first team, while Chenoweth, who also attends Wartburg, was a second-team selection. Central’s Dierikx also was a second-team selection.
Dierikx, an exercise science major, graduated in May with a 3.42 GPA. Chenoweth is a junior business administration major with a 3.76 GPA.
Steffens, who is an elementary education major and has a 3.90 GPA, advances to the national Academic All-America ballot. The CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America women’s team will be announced June 25.
