The new men’s soccer coach at Scott Community College might not need to go far to connect with his new players.
That’s because Shawn Atwater might be sitting next to one of his players in class next fall. The 24-year-old will be attending Scott.
Atwater was named the new coach last week, and he has his friend and mentor, Franco Muniz, to thank. Muniz, who was just named Scott’s new athletic director, has known Atwater for more than six years.
“I have been working with Muniz for awhile, and I’m glad we get to rebuild this program together,” said Atwater, who will be a first-time head coach.
Muniz received the job when former director Kari Hanson stepped down because she is having a baby.
“This is really exciting,” Atwater said. “When I received the news that I was hired along with Muniz, I was really thrilled about the opportunity.”
Atwater played for Muniz at Davenport North for four years and has been a volunteer assistant coach for Muniz’s F.C. America club team for two years.
For Muniz, it was a no-brainer to give the job to Atwater.
“Shawn was one of those players in high school who always asked questions,” he said. “That’s when I knew he could be good at coaching because he truly was a student of the game.”
Atwater will take over a Screaming Eagles program that went 7-10-1 and finished fourth in the Iowa Community College Athletic Association Conference last season.
“There’s no doubt that it will be a rebuilding process,” Atwater said. “I want to bring in team-first kind of guys who have discipline and respect for the game of soccer.”
This year, Atwater hopes his coaching style will connect with his players’ attitudes and abilities. He plans to bring in a system of possession soccer in which teammates trust each other. It’s an approach that Atwater hopes will force his players to connect with one other.
“I want to work from the ground up,” he said, “and with this, system I want our guys to develop character with one another.”
