Imagine the frustration of having thieves trying to break into your garage almost every month. Multiply that by 85,000 and it approaches the frustration those at IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union must be feeling.
At least three times this year, this Quad-City credit union has responded immediately and strongly to concerted scams designed to trick its 85,000 members into disclosing personal account information. These thieves have used auto-dialers and official-looking
e-mails to blanket the Quad-Cities with these phony appeals.
These attempted break-ins can be far more damaging on financial accounts than garages.
Credit Union representative Laura Ernzen said these scams are common in the industry, but are now hitting her company with frustrating frequency. Though a few customers have been tricked, Ernzen said no one has suffered permanent losses. She says federal authorities are actively investigating.
IH Mississippi Valley has been an ardent community supporter in addition to a successful credit union. We commend its extensive security and public information efforts to fight this scam head on. And we urge readers to follow the credit union’s advice and contact it and police if scammers hit again.
