Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich found new inspiration to actually do his job. News that Chicago is a finalist for the 2016 Olympics led the governor on Wednesday to gush:

“I will do everything I can as governor to pass a public works program that would enable us to invest in transit, roads, bridges and other infrastructure that will boost Chicago’s efforts to deliver the crown jewel of international sporting events to Illinois.”

He wouldn’t get it done for Illinois taxpayers. He wouldn’t get it done for the unions, chambers of commerce, transportation industry reps and other groups that have lobbied incessantly to get forward movement out of Springfield.

Blagojevich wouldn’t get a capital bill done for schoolchildren in Silvis and elsewhere after he’d personally promised new schools.

He won’t even do it for members of his own party who can’t discern which way the governor is leaning on any given day. He’s trashed the smoldering remains of bridges he’s long since burnt to lawmakers.

Most recently, he’s pitched a $34 billion plan with few specifics on which projects would actually get funded. To pay for it, he’s concocted ludicrous schemes to expand gambling and lease the lottery.

But for the chance to impress the Olympic committee, Blagojevich plans to pull out all the stops.

Knock yourself out,governor.
