A big part of Midwest history will be on display and up for sale at the 10th annual Stockyards Collector’s auction that will be Friday and Saturday in Moline.

The memorabilia comes from the largest and most productive stockyards in American history, said DeAnne Bloomberg, manager of the Rock Island County Farm Bureau.

Those stockyards, of course, were in Chicago, Kansas City, Omaha and East St. Louis, she said.

“When the Chicago Stockyards closed, that was a chapter of history that was gone,” she said. The yards in Kansas City, St. Louis and Omaha followed the way of Chicago.

The Chicago Stockyards opened in 1865 and ran for 106 years. The stockyards closed in July 1971. The Kansas City Stockyards operated from 1871 to 1974, while the Omaha yards were founded in 1883 and ran until 1999, and the East St. Louis Stockyards opened in 1873 and closed in 1997.

From these historic places there are all sorts of items that collectors want, Bloomberg said.

She said the Stockyards Collectors Club was formed about 10 years ago. One of the original members was her father-in-law in Springfield.

“It’s actually a unique group of people,” Bloomberg said. “A lot of the people have some kind of connection with the stockyards. Some showed their cattle there.”

What also is unique, she said, is that Clinton County, Iowa, was known at one time as the prime beef capital of the world.

Those people who worked at and used the stockyards, sent their livestock there and showed their livestock there are “the greatest generation from the farm perspective,” Bloomberg said.
