Consider a new idea for Credit Island

Davenport has cleared flood debris from the Credit Island golf course so many times, it would be easy to dispatch the crews to quickly do it again. They’re good at it.

But we’re heartened to see Davenport pause to consider if the ragged nine-hole golf course deserves to be rescued again. We’re not sure ourselves. The course enjoys warm support from faithful duffers who enjoy the pancake-flat fairways and affordability. It clearly serves a different niche than the city’s Emeis or Duck Creek courses. But it’s a niche served as well, if not better, by the Red Hawk course at 6364 Northwest Blvd., another example of smart Davenport collaboration.

That allows Credit Island to be considered for other uses. Among the first suggested was for recreational vehicle camping, which piqued our interest. While many, many golf courses exist in our area, there are no RV campsites on the river in the metro Quad-Cities.

We encourage Davenport to pursue this idea and generate a few others. Let’s see what alternatives exist before automatically restoring the old nine-hole course.
