A few comments on recent Quad-City Times articles and letters.

First, Ellen Goodman’s “Seniors put Hillary over the top,” (April 27). Good grief. I thought us old guys were smarter than that. Heaven help us.

Second, John Stevens’ “Start drilling and use grain for food, not fuel.” (April 27) Yes, it’s about time we realized we need to take more advantage of our own resources and give more consideration to nuclear power.

Third, the Iowa smoking ban. As a nonsmoker I welcome knowing that when I go out to eat I won’t have be concerned about secondhand smoke. However, I feel it should be up to the bar or restaurant owner to decide.

If they want smoking, OK, just require them to post a very visible notice on the outside of their establishment that states smoking is allowed. Then you decide to patronize or not.

Lastly, Tim Jansen’s “A homemade energy plan: get a tune-up,” (April 28). To add to that: slow down. If every driver on the interstate and highway never exceeded 65 mph, preferably 60 mph, in a few months we would have an excess of gas on hand.

Then maybe some of the exorbitant cost per barrel could be kept in this country instead of further enriching all those Arabs.

One in 10 Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving Day at a restaurant and more than half will purchase restaurant-prepared takeout items. And the cost is up for those doing it all at home. What are you doing this year?
I am hosting Thanksgiving at my house.
I will be a guest at someone’s home.
I plan to eat out at a local restaurant.
I will eat at home but we are not cooking: Some or all of the food will be catered.
I hosted Thanksgiving for years. It is someone else’s turn.
    I have no plans.
