The search for a new president of Rock Island Renaissance has been narrowed down to two candidates, the current president said Wednesday.
Mike Thoms, who has led Renaissance Rock Island since 2005, declined to identify the finalists. However, he said the economic development organization now hopes to have a new president in place in early June.
Thoms, who announced in February he would resign as part of a staff-wide reorganization, said the search process drew 35 prospective candidates from across the country as well as Canada.
Thoms said the search committee is pleased with the quality of candidates. He added that he plans to stay on staff through the transition.
Renaissance Rock Island is a consortium of nonprofit organizations dedicated to revitalization in Rock Island. The recent reorganization combined the staffs of the three groups into one. Renaissance Rock Island is made up of the Development Association of Rock Island, or DARI; Rock Island Economic Growth Corp., or GROWTH; and the Downtown Rock Island Arts & Entertainment District, more commonly known as The District.
Originally, Thoms said a new president could be hired as early as April.
The organization is waiting for the new president to get on board before it moves forward with filling a vacant position for a downtown manager — a position created by the reorganization. Thoms said the new president will help determine the group’s staffing needs as well as if the position if financially feasible.
Working in a part-time capacity, Thoms has donated his time and expertise to Renaissance Rock Island since 1995 when the former longtime leader, Dan Carmody, resigned. At the time, Thoms was serving as DARI chairman and had recently retired from his family’s former company, Performance Food Group-TPC.
