Team races
Class 1A winner — West Hancock went from four points down entering Saturday’s competition to a four-point win (44-40) over West Lyon.
Class 2A winner — Mid-Prairie finished with 69 points, including 40 from Aaron Stockstell. Monticello was second at 47.
Class 3A winner — Cedar Rapids Xavier exploded for 68 points Saturday to double up Mount Pleasant with 100.5 points.
Class 4A winner — Pleasant Valley logged 35 points on Day 3 and finished with 77, three better than Iowa City West. Blake Irwin highlighted the final day for the Spartans with wins in the 800 and 1,600.
100-meter dash
Class 1A champion — Alex Feilmeier (Glidden-Ralston) 11.34.
Notable: There wasn’t any wind and the weather was a little warmer than Friday, but Feilmeier was the only finalist to better his qualifying time.
Class 2A champion — Kyle Schuett (Cherokee) 11.08.
Notable: Assumption senior Willie Argo placed seventh in 11.43. He ran a 11.33 Friday and was the eighth qualifier.
Class 3A champion — Derek Kramer (Cedar Rapids Xavier) 11.00.
Notable: Xavier also claimed second place with Bryce Colston, who clocked an 11.08.
Class 4A champion — Jarred Herring (Burlington) 10.76.
Notable: Davenport North senior Darian Peer capped his comeback from tendinitis in his left hip to finish fifth at 11.12. Peer’s progress was slowed this season following injury rehab for last year’s injury.
“It felt great,” he said. “I knew it was going to be a good race. That’s a good way to go out.“
200
Class 1A champion — Alex Feilmeier (Glidden-Ralston) 22.63.
Notable: Feilmeier ran the exact same time in Friday’s preliminary race to win his first 200 championship.
Class 2A champion — Aaron Stockstell (Mid-Prairie) 21.96.
Notable: The win gave Stockstell 10 overall state titles but just his first in the 200.
Class 3A champion — Bryce Colston (Cedar Rapids Xavier) 22.68.
Notable: Colston’s winning time a year ago actually was better at 22.58.
Class 4A champion — Jarred Herring (Burlington) 21.79.
Notable: Herring repeated as champion after running a 22.21 as a junior.
800
Class 1A champion — Ryan Krogmann (Northeast) 1:56.46.
Notable: Krogmann took his first lead in the closing meters and won by 0.02 seconds over West Lyon’s Aaron Kerkvliet. Krogmann’s Rebels teammate Shaun Eberhart finished 11th at 2:02.54.
Class 2A champion — Aaron Stockstell (Mid-Prairie) 1:51.17.
Notable: Stocksdell broke his own state meet record by 1.4 seconds to win his third straight 800 title to go with his three 400 crowns. “The third day is the hardest, but I feel good,” he said. “It’s emotional. I’m pretty drained.“
Class 3A champion — Isaac Wendland (Charles City) 1:53.74.
Notable: Wendland’s title was his third straight.
Class 4A champion — Blake Irwin (Pleasant Valley) 1:52.69.
Notable: Irwin’s win was his second straight state 800 title. Pleasant Valley’s Devin Allbaugh placed sixth at 1:55.33, Davenport Central’s Robbie Pogue was ninth at 1:58.18 and North Scott’s Matt Meyer took 13th at 1:59.19.
1,600
Class 1A champion — David Nielsen (Cedar Falls NUH) 4:30.57.
Notable: Drew Sikkema of Clinton Prince of Peace was second in 4:32.54. Not bad for the senior who helped the Irish golf team qualify for state a day earlier and finished third in the 3,200 on Thursday.
“I’m trying to carry the load for my teams,” he said.
Northeast’s Ryan Krogmann was third in 4:32.6.
Class 2A champion — Nathan Dotterweich (Monticello) 4:23.73.
Notable: Columbus senior Casey Robertson took fifth in 4:34.76, and sophomore teammate Same Chaney (4:34.86) was sixth.
“We ran good, but there’s some outstanding runners out there,” Robertson said. “Nathan Dotterweich is phenomenal.”
Tipton’s Eric Thien was eighth.
Class 3A champion — Isaac Wendland (Charles City) 4:22.06.
Notable: The title was Wendland’s fourth in the mile, a feat unmatched in Iowa high school state history.
“It’s surreal,” he said. “Right after the 800, I threw up once and felt tired. My coaches had to pour food and water down my throat.“
Class 4A champion — Blake Irwin (Pleasant Valley) 4:21.36.
Notable: Irwin caught teammate Devin Allbaugh on the final 100 meters to repeat as champion. The Spartans collected 18 points in their final event, eventually giving them the edge over Iowa City West. Bettendorf junior Nick Young finished fourth in 4:24.38.
110 hurdles
Class 1A champion — Austin McBeth (Waco) 14.68.
Notable: McBeth didn’t even run the 110 hurdles at last year’s state meet. Defending champion Brandon Lyle of Keota was second at 14.8.
Class 2A champion — Channing Puls (Hudson) 14.67.
Notable: Puls’ win was the first for the Hudson boys at the state meet.
Class 3A champion — Jordan Mullen (Atlantic) 14.29.
Notable: Central DeWitt’s Casey Kreiter didn’t reach the final, but his 15.94 preliminary time would have been good for seventh place Saturday.
Class 4A champion — Dan Davis (Iowa City West) 14.47.
Notable: Defending champion and top seed Terrance Roberts of Waterloo West was disqualified after a false start. Clinton junior Ethan Holmes finished second in 14.56. Pleasant Valley senior Drew Schradel took fifth in 15.26.
400 relay
Class 1A champion — West Hancock 43.48.
Notable: West Hancock used this race to leapfrog West Lyon in the team standings. West Lyon finished fifth, earning four points to West Hancock’s 10.
Class 2A champion — Roland Story 43.59.
Notable: Davenport Assumption clocked a 44.3, good enough for third place. “There’s no room for error,” Knights anchor Willie Argo said. “One bad handoff, and you’re done.“
Class 3A champion — Cedar Rapids Xavier 42.18.
Notable: Xavier broke the previous all-time 3A record of 42.33 thanks to a fine anchor leg from Bryce Colston. Mount Pleasant finished 1.24 seconds back.
Class 4A champion — Burlington 42.86.
Notable: Bettendorf placed fourth in 43.28, and Davenport North was sixth in 43.78. With a final chance to surpass Pleasant Valley in the team race, Iowa City West was disqualified after a botched handoff at the first turn.
1,600 relay
Class 1A champion — Lake Mills 3:28.99.
Notable: Every team in the 1A finals finished with a higher time than they clocked in the preliminary race.
Class 2A champion — St. Edmond Fort Dodge 3:23.42.
Notable: West Liberty placed fourth in 3:29.6.
Class 3A champion — Washington 3:21.94.
Notable: The win was the only one of the meet for the Washington boys.
Class 4A champion — Cedar Falls 3:21.71.
Notable: Clinton finished second in 3:22.34 led by Ethan Holmes 49.3-second anchor leg.
Shuttle hurdle relay
Class 1A champion — Waco 58.15.
Notable: Waco’s time beat last year’s Class 1A record set by Riceville at 59.26. Madrid finished second Saturday at 58.17
Class 2A champion — Hudson 57.09.
Notable: Hudson set a state meet record, breaking the mark of 57.6 it set during Thursday’s qualifying.
Class 3A champion — Atlantic 57.3.
Notable: The top four finishers in Class 3A surpassed the all-time class record of 58.52.
Class 4A champion — Iowa City West 56.15.
Notable: West’s win made it 4-for-4 among the boys shuttle hurdle records set. West previously held the time at 56.55 after Thursday’s qualifying. Muscatine placed fourth at 58.02 after entering the finals seeded seventh.
