DES MOINES — Ryan Krogmann couldn’t shake Friday’s disappointment.
Good thing, too.
Roughly 17 hours after letting his lead in the anchor of the Class 1A distance medley relay dissolve in his final strides, the Northeast junior made West Lyon’s Aaron Kerkvliet look just as silly in Saturday’s 800.
On the final morning of the Iowa state track and field meet, Krogmann legged his way past Kerkvliet at the finish line to win by .02 seconds. Kerkvliet initially took the lead from Krogmann to open the final lap.
Krogmann, who anchored the Rebels’ 3,200 relay to a championship Thursday, clocked in at 1 minute, 56.46 seconds in Saturday’s 800.
“I got passed at the end (Friday), and I didn’t want that to happen again,” Krogmann said. “I was really, really upset last night. It kind of ended badly.
“This definitely makes it all worthwhile.”
A few hours after the 800 win, Krogmann placed third in the 1,600, almost catching Clinton Prince of Peace runner Drew Sikkema.
In all, Krogmann’s efforts helped Northeast to a third-place team finish in Class 1A with 34 points. West Hancock won with 44.
Sikkema was equally clutch, particularly as Prince of Peace’s lone state qualifier.
He led the mile with 400 meters to go before David Nielsen of Cedar Falls NUH caught him. Krogmann nearly caught up as well, finishing 0.06 seconds behind Sikkema.
“I knew the race was going to be fast,” Sikkema said. “But I knew Ryan ran the 800 this morning so he was tired.
“I knew (Nielsen) was going to go after it, but (second place) felt good.“
On Friday, Sikkema shot 84 at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City to help the Irish advance to next weekend’s state golf tournament. And that came after he placed third in the 3,200 at Drake Stadium on Thursday.
In Class 2A, Davenport Assumption capped a seventh-place team finish by taking third in the 400 relay.
Roland Story won the event at 43.59, but the Knights ran their best — a 44.30.
“There’s no room for error,” Assumption anchor Willie Argo said. “One bad handoff, and you’re done.“
The Knights finished with 26 team points. Mid-Prairie won the 2A title with 69.
