Faster than you can drive from Muscatine to Clinton, Muscatine’s Danielle Frere, Clinton’s Ethan Holmes and Davenport North’s AG Bradford won state titles Friday afternoon, the former and latter breaking Class 4A state-meet records at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Frere entered the Class 4A finals tied with state discus champion Taylor Freeman of Iowa City West at 44-feet-8¾, but Frere went 45-9 on her first throw in the finals to take the lead for good. With the title in hand, Frere uncorked a 46-11¾ effort on the final throw of the event, breaking the all-class state meet record by half an inch.

“My main goal since last year was to win both Drake (Relays) and here and go undefeated in the shot, and it happened,” Frere said.

Next, Holmes avenged a loss by 0.01 to Kellyn Fogarty of Marshalltown in last year’s finals by beating Fogarty to the finish line and winning the Class 4A boys 400-meter hurdles in 53.03. Fogarty was second in 53.25.

“Losing by a hundredth of a second sticks with you,” Holmes said. “I knew he was right there. He beat me at that point last year, but I couldn’t let it happen again.”

Bradford completed the triple feature, winning her third title in two days — and setting her second 4A record in that span — with a 1:00.82 clocking in the girls 400 hurdles.

“I was tired the whole time, and I almost fell on the second-to-last hurdle,” Bradford said.

Bradford broke the record of 1:02.76 set last year by Kersten Thorgaard of Ames. She also bested her 1:01.01 effort from the Drake Relays, which was the second-best time all-time in the state. Only Debbie Esser (57.30 in 1975) has posted a better time in the state.
