After three straight  one-run games, the Augustana baseball team was eliminated from the NCAA Division III Regional on Saturday, losing to Linfield 10-1.

The Vikings (34-13) scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth when junior John Vezzetti doubled and scored on senior Marc  Blakeley’s sacrifice fly.

Linfield’s Joshua Guterman was picked to make his first start of the season because of Augustana’s lefty-packed lineup.

Guterman got plenty of help on offense as the Wildcats (34-11) put the game away in the seventh when Rhett Fenton hit his second home run of the game, a three-run blast to put Linfield up 9-1. Fenton led the Wildcats with five RBIs.

Augustana starter Mike Pagano (4-2) gave up four runs in 32/3 innings.

“We had a good run,” Vikings coach Greg Wallace said. “I told the team, ‘Don’t let 1 or 2 games in this regional take away from what you accomplished this season. We deserved to be here.’ Linfield just did what needed to be done to advance. We now need to see what is needed to be done to improve heading into next season.”

Linfield manager Scott Brosius, who played for the Oakland A’s and New York Yankees in the major leagues, landed his alma mater in the World Series after defeating Webster 4-3 on Saturday.

“We are a team that tries to score runs every inning,” Brosius said. “We don’t really look for the big inning. That is what we did today. I do feel I know some things about fielding and hitting from my years in the majors, but as a coach, compared to being a player, I have learned there is always more to learn.”
