Andrew's Manders earns silver in 400 hurdles

DES MOINES — Corey Manders might as well hop his way around the entire track.

It’s clearly his strong suit.

The Andrew senior flaunted his leaping ability on Friday, finishing second in the boys Class 1A 400-meter hurdles at the Iowa state track meet at Drake Stadium.

The remarkable thing about Manders’ finish wasn’t necessarily his time of 54.44 seconds, but rather his improvement.

On Thursday, he ran the open 400 against equally tough competition and finished sixth with a time of 51.22.

“It’s a great accomplishment,” Manders said of his hurdles finish. “All I could think was give it everything I had. I did, but I came up short.“

Still he shaved a full second off his personal best and 1.47 off his runner-up time at last year’s state meet.

Manders’ efforts single-handedly have Andrew in eighth place in the Class 1A team standings with 11 points.

Davenport Assumption also got plenty acquainted with runner-up finishes Friday.

Early in the day, the Knights finished second in the 800 relay behind anchor Willie Argo. The senior later paced the 400 relay to second place in qualifying for today’s final.

Assumption was maddeningly close in both events.

The Knights finished .13 seconds out of first in the 800 as they improved on their ninth-place finish from a year ago.

“I thought everyone ran well,” Argo said. “We’ve got to be happy with that. We know we had a shot to win.“

In the 400 relay, the Knights finished just .09 seconds behind top qualifier Okoboji.

In Class 1A, Northeast’s distance medley relay gave the area its only other top-two finish among the three smaller classes.

The Rebels moved from fifth to first on their last lap, but anchor Ryan Krogmann couldn’t hold off the team from BCLUW Conrad in the final 100 meters. The finish marked the second straight runner-up for Northeast in the medley.

“They just had a little more kick,” Krogmann said. “I just had to make up so much ground; (Conrad) had something left, where I didn’t at all.“

Krogmann runs the individual 800 and 1,600 today, giving the Rebels hope. They trail Class 1A team points leader West Lyon by four.
