Nearly 2,000 people strolled through Niabi Zoo under umbrellas and rain gear May 3 to make the first Quad-Cities Walk to Cure Diabetes a success.
More than $127,000 was raised during the event.
Money raised by the walk will help fund the artificial pancreas project at the University of Iowa. The research is studying a closed-loop system with an insulin pump and sensor. The sensor takes blood sugar readings every five minutes. The insulin pump acts automatically as blood-sugar levels increase or decrease to maintain a desirable level.
