EDGINGTON, Ill. — After breezing through its fifth straight Illinois Class A sectional title, the defending state champion Sherrard girls track team voiced confidence that it will leave a mark at next weekend’s state meet in Charleston.

“I am happy with who we are sending there,” Tigers coach Todd Volert said. “I think we are going to bring back some medals but, after that, it is out of our control. We can’t be overconfident despite our past success. As I told this team tonight, everybody else here wants to go to state as bad as we do.”

Sherrard is sending sophomore Lacey Hainline, junior Shelbie Pettie and sophomore Sarah Boraas who all placed in multiple events at Friday’s sectional as well as three relay teams.

For Hainline, this was her first year competing in individual events. During the team’s state title run in 2007, she was on relay teams because of the team’s depth. She turned that individual opportunity into a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash (13.25) and a second in the 400 meters (1:00.37).

“It feels great to advance to state in individual events,” she said. “It is a lot different than last year when I was just in team events. I don’t want this success to stop, though. I want to do well for me as well as for my team.”

Sherrard wasn’t the only one with success, despite outscoring second-place Elmwood 129-61 in the sectional team race (Wethersfield was third with 54.5, followed by West Central’s 52.5, and Knoxville’s 52).

Wethersfield advanced all four of its relay teams to state as well as senior Dani Williams, who finished second in the 100 (13.56).

West Central junior Miriam Rutzen won the triple jump (34 feet, 7 inches), the high jump (5-3) and the 400 (59.30).
